The Walking Dead’s Chandler Riggs warns against brain-eating amoeba

Safety advisories have gone out in some areas of Texas warning residents to avoid using tap water due to the presence of brain-eating amoeba called Naegleria fowleri. The Walking Dead’s Chandler Riggs posted a timely warning featuring a memorable scene from the show, commenting that “it’s time.”

Riggs posted a gif of himself as Carl Grimes along with Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes. They’re at the prison and they’re shooting their guns into the darkness, presumably at advancing walkers, the Governor’s people or some other threat. It’s a tongue and cheek reference to people needing to defend themselves from the undead, which could come from these brain-eating menaces.

Naegleria fowleri can be found in almost any kind of warm freshwater systems including lakes and streams, ponds and hot springs, as well as the discharge from power plants. Though rare, they can even be found in water heaters and pools.

These amoeba usually enter through the nose and can cause a condition called naegleriasis. The symptoms begin with headaches and fever and can progress to seizures, hallucinations and confusion. Once infected, death can occur within two weeks. The disease is not known to pass from person to person and it is mainly contained to humans, though some animals have been found to be infected.

Riggs is clearly making a joke about the situation, but there is certainly cause to pay attention to the situation because the presence of these amoeba is cause for concern. (And let’s face it, we don’t know how the zombie virus begins) Brain-eating amoeba are no joke and residents in the impacted areas should take note.

It’s not unusual to think about zombies when things like brain-eating amoeba or people going crazy on bath salts make the news. These situations could certainly give rise to bigger problems if left untreated.

And let’s face it, brain-eating amoeba are so on brand for 2020.
