Despite being set deep in the apocalypse, World Beyond takes fans back to the early days

The Walking Dead: World Beyond showrunner Matt Negrete knows the apocalypse. He was a writer on the flagship series for several seasons and so when he says that his new show World Beyond will appeal to TWD fans, we believe him. The Walking Dead: World Beyond might have a younger feel but it embraces all of the things that TWD fans have always loved about the franchise.

During the Talking Dead TWD Universe Preview Special, Negrete talked about what fans will appreciate about the newest spin-off in the TWD Universe. World Beyond is “more of what [fans] love from The Walking Dead.” The only difference, of course, is that it’s seeing the “apocalypse through a whole new lens” because the cast is much younger than any of the other shows.

World Beyond will play a pivotal role in linking the greater TWD Universe. Fans have already seen the CRM helicopters factoring heavily into the World Beyond story after they were spotted in glimpses on The Walking Dead and Fear TWD. Negrete hinted that CRM is tied to the larger mythology being built and it will tie into whatever it was that Jadis was involved with, which is also tied to Rick’s fate.

One of the big differences for the show hinges on the work being done to create thrilling new zombies. Instead of walkers, these zombies are known as “empties” and the art department is really pushing the boundaries to create things that fans haven’t seen before.

Spotting fun new walkers has always been one of the many joys of watching The Walking Dead. Greg Nicotero’s team worked hard to deliver memorable walkers, from the iconic Bike Girl and the little girl that Rick shoots in the pilot all the way to the Well Walker and Winslow. Negrete teases that the empties will have people talking because they’re so different from anything we’ve seen so far, and it’s true; thanks to a plane crash, fans will see empties in a whole new light.

World Beyond is worth a watch for a number of reasons, but for OG TWD fans it will feel like the early days and that’s not a bad thing.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond premieres Sunday, October 4 at 10pm on AMC.
