The Walking Dead season 10 finale recap: A Certain Doom
The long-awaited season 10 finale of The Walking Dead has finally arrived
Fans have been waiting for the conclusion to the Whisperer War, and The Walking Dead season 10 finale delivered on all fronts. Here’s your recap of “A Certain Doom.”
The episode begins in the hospital. Father Gabriel is running around as everyone prepares. The dead are outside and they’re surrounded. He looks out a window and sees them. RJ and Grace are there behind him and they’re scared. He uses his hand to reveal that together they’re a mighty weapon. He hints that “the others” are coming, they’re the ones that aren’t there yet.
Daryl, Carol and Kelly run inside the building. Eugene, Yumiko, Ezekiel and Princess ride their bikes along the open road. Virgil arrives back in Oceanside. Together they will fight, he says. Alden and Aaron are out there fighting and a masked ninja figure shows up.
Maggie finds the letter saying that she needs to come back because they have lost so many people. She reads the letter with resolve in her expression.
Outside the hospital, Beta walks with his people. They’re chanting. It’s hard to tell who is talking or if it’s all in his head. Time seems to freeze as they all stop to look at him. “Begin,” he says.
Cue the credits, here we go!
On the road, it appears that Eugene has had an accident on his bike. The group comes together to try to fix his bike but he thinks it’s too late to make it to Stephanie on time. He doesn’t see the point in continuing on their mission because the reality is that they won’t make it in time. Ezekiel tells him that they won’t go back. Eugene was there for him, so he’s going to be there for Eugene. They have to keep trying for everyone. “Even if it means carrying [Eugene] over his damn shoulder.” Eugene agrees, but he has doubts. Princess doesn’t see why he should give up hope. They won’t know until they get there.
Carol and Daryl go down the stairs. They’re talking about Michonne’s message and Daryl says he would have gone with her, but Carol reminds him that the only reason she felt comfortable leaving is because he was there to care for RJ and Judith. Carol reminds him that she’s still there, too.
Gabriel rallies the group and walks through the plan. Luke says he’s ready to go. He has all of the supplies but they have to bring the supplies to the wagon so they can do their “pied piper” thing. They will have to go through the herd and Lydia says she can help. Beatrice says Oceanside isn’t ready to trust her (this catches Negan’s attention) but Gabriel says her role is inside.
Carol goes to grab weapons and Diane reminds her that Negan was the one who helped attach Hilltop. Lydia asks if Carol needs help. She doesn’t want Carol to avoid her. She isn’t upset about killing Alpha. She’d like it if they can still talk about things. Carol tells her to find her own way, and Lydia tells her she’s not looking for another mother. Carol looks away as she says it could be something else, just like Carol can be someone else.
Luke loads up Jules with walker guts while Jerry helps Magna. Daryl sees Negan isn’t wearing walker slop. He says he’s the biggest target out there because of what happened to “Fee Fie Foe Asshole.” Daryl warns him that he needs to be part of this.
When it’s time to go, Judith waves to Daryl as the group with the radio parts head into the foyer. They prepare to open the doors and let the walkers in so they can move out. It works. They make it outside without being noticed.
We see things from Kelly’s perspective. It’s silen and she can only see through the skin mask as she follows Daryl. Carol moves through the crowd with Beatrice. The walkers don’t suspect a thing. Luke and his girlfriend hold hands. Magna looks shell shocked in the crowd of walkers, but Jerry offers her a comforting hand.
Soon they spot a Whisperer, but an arrow takes him out before he can do anything. The walkers descend upon him. Lydia looks at the crowd and spots the Whisperers and Diane shoots them. Beta looks up and sees them in the window and tells everyone to tighten the herd to avoid being shot. Lydia realizes that Beta knows they’re in the group, but they’re distracted by an explosion on the stairs.
Judith sees the dying Whisperer on the stairs and closes the door. “They’re coming up,” she says.
Gabriel organizes the survivors. They have an escape plan. Negan sees Lydia and tells her that she knows how this ends, but she says neither one knows. She won’t leave, and he says they won’t ever be trusted. They could slip out, he says. He smiles and says he isn’t a hero. “You could be,” he says. He gives her Alpha’s mask before slipping down the elevator shaft.
Outside, things are tense as the herd gets closer together.
Some of the group has made it through. Daryl and Kelly arrive, but Carol and Beatrice are still out there.

A Whisperer spots Beatrice and Carol. The Whisperer grabs Beatrice’s leg and stabs her so that she cries out and Beatrice calls for Carol to take the backpack as they devour her.
Carol keeps walking. When she gets outside of the herd she sees Lydia, in her mother’s mask, with the backpack.
Back inside, Gabriel radios Daryl to say they need to get moving. Dog barks when the doors start breaking.
Beta is with the herd when he hears the dead talking to him. “The end is here,” the walker says. Suddenly the song “Burning Down the House” starts playing, and the walker looks at Beta and says “our end.”
On the road, they have a wagon fixed up with a massive amplifier. They’re going to lead the walkers away from the hospital.
Gabriel says the evacuation has started but they need time. They don’t have it.
Night has fallen as the wagon train keeps playing the song over and over again. Lydia spots Whisperers infiltrating the walkers and they kill them, telling the wagon to speed up. It gets hectic as Whisperers start descending on the group. The wagon wheels start coming off, literally, and the Whisperers overtake the wagon and stop the music.
Daryl doesn’t get a response from Gabriel. They need to find a way to get the herd to the cliff and Lydia says she can do it. They have to move, now.
Gabriel tells everyone to leave, and Judith realizes that Gabriel isn’t coming. She asks if Rosita knows and he tells Judith to tell her that she is his “media naranja” and promises that she will know what that means. As everyone makes it out of the room, Gabriel says a prayer as the Whisperers come in. They tackle him to the ground but the masked ninja kills them, with Maggie firing the last shot. He hugs her. Aaron and Alden are there, too.
Beta knows his people are being killed around him but he’s powerless. He hears someone call him from behind. It’s Negan in a skin mask. He knocks Negan to the ground and Daryl comes out of nowhere and stabs him in the eyes. Beta sees Alpha talking to him as his life as a Whisperer flashes before his eyes. The dead pull him down, tearing at his mask as they go.
Daryl and Negan watch as he dies. Negan recognizes his face. “Holy shit, do you know who that asshole was?” Daryl says he was nobody.
The next day, Carol finds Lydia at the front of the herd and tells her to go. “My choice. I finish it,” Carol tells her. Carol leads them to the cliff and stands there, ready to sacrifice herself. She stands there, alone, bathed in sunlight. The dead approach and start moving over the edge. At the last minute, Lydia pulls Carol to safety and holds her against a rock as they follow each other to their deaths.
Carol told her to go, but Lydia reminds her that she told her to find her own path and she did. Carol thanks her. Lydia tosses the mask over the edge and continues to hold on to Carol for dear life as the walkers all fall over the cliffs until every last one of them is gone.
Later, the group surveys their losses and reunites with family and friends. Gabriel drapes his coat over Rosita and baby Coco.
Aaron brings Grace to meet Maggie again.
Judith and RJ approach Maggie and she smiles. Judith gives her a big hug.
Carol and Lydia return and tell everyone it’s done. Carol says it’s all thanks to Lydia.
Lydia sees Negan and sees that he’s still there. “For now,” he says, hugging her.
Carol sees Daryl and asks if he’s good. He is. “It’s over, right?” He wants to know if she got what she wanted and she didn’t. “You’ve still got me,” he says. They hug. He reminds her about New Mexico. “Maybe someday,” she tells him. But their work isn’t done.
In the woods, a very dirty hand clutches at some leaves. It’s CONNIE! She’s alive, but barely. She stumbles through the woods with a nasty head wound. She finally collapses on a road, in time for Virgil to ride up and find her there. She passes out.
Eugene’s group arrives at the meeting point. He announces himself, with Princess teasing him about his “code” as he yells into the distance. There is no response.
Later on, Ezekiel suggests that they stay in one of the train cars. Eugene doesn’t think she’s ever coming. Yumiko tries to tell him not to regret anything, but he doesn’t want to turn back. He knows there are people out there and they need to find them. Princess smiles. She thinks he’s incredibly horny for wanting to find his girl.
Suddenly, lights turn on and soldiers run in, surrounding them. Once their weapons are down, they realize they’re in trouble.
And that’s it, that’s the end of season 10. What did you think of the episode? Let us know in the comments!
