The Walking Dead: World Beyond offered a lot of drama in its series premiere.

It was hard to know what to expect from The Walking Dead: World Beyond. The series looked like it could be a different look at the zombie apocalypse and it delivered on some fronts while falling short in a few other areas.

World Beyond made its television premiere on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020, and provided fans with an episode that should not only set the tone for the show moving forward but has already established a road map for what may be to come.

The characters all feel like tropes. Through the first episode, the major characters seem like they’d fit well into a movie like The Breakfast Club, with the four youths being represented by the rebel, the bookworm, the misunderstood, and the bored but, past those one-dimensional looks, there is some depth which will likely be unveiled as the show goes on.

The setting is gorgeous enough. Once the show ventured outside the walls of the Campus Community, the Nebraska backdrop looks much different from that of the other two shows in the franchise. The group traveling to New York should keep the visual appeal of the show going for a while.

While the premiere did develop characters, it also set up plenty of drama. It asked a lot of questions. Here are some of the biggest concerns:

  • What is really happening in New York?
  • Why would the CRM destroy the Campus Community?
  • How will Iris and Elton react when they learn the truth about their moms?
  • What did Silas do to earn such a negative reputation?
  • What will Huck and Felix do when they catch up to the kids?
  • Have fans already seen Elizabeth Kublek’s daughter before?

For an hour-long episode, the drama came on many occasions but those key plot points were delivered more subtly than other shows have done in the past. It forces viewers to pay attention to the story at all times.

The younger survivors and strange plot may be a turnoff to some, but The Walking Dead: World Beyond is planting plenty of seeds to create a compelling story with a constantly changing arc that includes some combustible elements. As a whole, it’s well worth the watch.
