Connie’s return in The Walking Dead 1016 could help bring Virgil back

One of the biggest questions fans had going into the season 10 finale of The Walking Dead was this: Where is Connie? She has quickly become a fan-favorite, so there was plenty of hope that she would show up in episode 1016. Thankfully, the finale gave us our answer, and alongside it, the unlikely return of a character with ties to Michonne.

Near the end of episode 1016, we see the hand of what appears to be a walker covered in dust grasping at the ground. It turns out to be a barely-alive Connie struggling to navigate through the woods after somehow escaping both the cave-in and the Whisperer horde that destroyed Hilltop. She stumbles around, eventually collapsing on the road when someone strolls up on horseback.

That “someone” turned out to be a familiar face from earlier in season 10: Virgil.

Last we saw of Virgil, he was left feeling guilty after tricking and capturing Michonne on an island that he promised was full of weapons to fight the Whisperers. Michonne mercifully spared his life, even offering him a chance to come back and join the survivors, but Virgil decided to remain on the island.

So, when it was revealed that Virgil was the one to discover Connie, it was a complete shock.

Perhaps he had finally had enough being on his own, deciding to find the communities and do more with his life than just survive. That being said, considering that Michonne never returned from her trip with Virgil and the big promise of weapons and supplies was never fulfilled, will the survivors accept him?

That’s where Connie comes into play. She is clinging onto life at the moment, and Virgil is seemingly the only one who can help her. If he nurses her back to health and brings her back to her loved ones, like Kelly and Daryl, then perhaps the communities will forgive him for his wrongdoings and allow him to stick around.

The communities are already on edge given the devastation surrounding the final battle of the Whisperer War, so Virgil saving Connie may be the only way they allow him to join.

No matter how it goes down, Connie’s return to the survivors will be an emotional one. Whether the communities will continue to be skeptical towards Virgil remains to be seen, but at this point, the two characters’ paths are intertwined going into season 11.
