Negan had an opportunity to leave in season 10 of The Walking Dead but decided to stay instead.

As one of the most polarizing characters from AMC‘s The Walking Dead, Negan brings a lot of intrigue to the show. Many fans embrace him for being a strong and entertaining survivor while others still haven’t forgiven him for killing Glenn, Abraham, and other actions when he was with the Saviors.

In fact, Negan’s mere existence in Alexandria polarized the community and his escape put many survivors on their toes. After the accident with Margo, his stock took a huge dip again as he got locked back up.

It was Carol who gave him his freedom, which he repaid by delivering Alpha’s head. But now the question of where Negan fits into the show and how others will react to him has to be asked…especially when he was given an opportunity to leave and make a life for himself during the chaos of episode 1016.

But Negan didn’t leave. Instead, he ventured into the horde to give the survivors a better chance against Beta and his army of Whisperers. But was that the right move for the former leader of the Saviors?

Negan already tried venturing out by himself once and didn’t care for the results. He returned to Alexandria to prove he isn’t a threat anymore.

When you add that all up with Negan protecting Lydia and Judith, his willingness to work as a gardener for the community, and his infiltration of the Whisperers, chances are that Negan feels he has redeemed himself enough to get a fair shake and possibly a fresh start.

However, that will be complicated. Maggie’s return is bound to add some conflict to the mix and members of the Highwaymen and people of the communities could still have a lot of beef with him.

In the end, it is his devotion to Judith and Lydia that likely influenced him to stay and risk his life against Beta and the Whisperers. Those reasons are enough for him to stick around, even if that means having to deal with those who still don’t trust or respect him. It may take some time, but watching his complicated redemption arc play out on The Walking Dead has been an absolute pleasure.
