Connecting The Walking Dead: ‘Blaze Of Gory’
By Liam O'Leary
1) “The wind always wins.”
Our first entry in this week’s Connecting The Walking Dead comes to us from Elton, who, upon seeing an empty partially crushed under a fallen tree, quipped “The wind always wins.”
When pressed for an explanation by Hope as to what he meant, Elton explained that the saying was part of a lesson his mother was trying to teach him about nature deciding who lives and who dies, whilst remarking that it turned out that she was right.
What’s striking about this is that this quote is eerily similar to one uttered by Travis Manawa to his English class in the pilot episode of Fear The Walking Dead, where he was trying to teach them a crucial lesson through the works of novelist Jack London, specifically, that “Nature always wins.”
Was Elton’s mother an English teacher, too? Was she an avid fan of Jack London? Did she know Travis? Now, obviously, the quotes aren’t exactly the same, and, that lesson is one anyone could glean from any number of things, but, the mere fact the sentiment is used at all is something that I doubt was coincidental (Even if there is no actual link between Travis and Elton’s mom in the Walking Dead universe), and an idea that I think we’ll see more of as World Beyond progresses.
Who knows? Maybe there will be a connection revealed between Travis and Elton’s mom after all that won’t be revealed until later in the series. All we can do is speculate.
