3) The Downfall Of Omaha…Lincoln…whichever

While the first episode gave us a good deal of backstory for Iris and Hope Bennett (And, by extension, their parents) during the outbreak, this episode spent more time focusing on their guardian, Felix, and what happened to him during the outbreak. What we learned was just how much the destruction of Omaha/Lincoln was similar to the destruction of Atlanta.

While the first flashback reveals Felix’s unplanned coming out to his father (And how poorly that went), the remainder follow Felix the night the apocalypse hit, with him standing on a gridlocked highway with dozens of others, watching in horror as, suddenly, military jets launch rockets and bombs upon the city, setting it ablaze, before Felix runs home, trying to reach his family and get them to safety. Watching Felix watch the destruction of the city immediately reminded me of something…

Way back in the fifth episode of season two of The Walking Dead, “Chupacabra”, we saw a very similar scene, only this time, it was on the road leading into Atlanta. The road was just the same — Packed to the gills with cars going nowhere, drivers getting out of their cars to see what was going on, etc. — however, in this version of events, amongst the motorists and passengers are Lori, Carl, Shane, Carol, her husband, Ed, and their daughter, Sophia.

Yet, there is where the differences, largely, end, because, as Carl begins playing with Sophia under Carol’s watchful eye, Lori and Shane watch as many of their fellow refugees begin making their way through the woods to the left side of the road. As they follow the crowd, the look on in horror to see Atlanta, the city they were all heading to for safety, be bombarded and incinerated by the military.

It was interesting to see the same scenario play out with different characters, and in a different location, but be, essentially, the same events. Having seen this, one wonders what other parallels between World Beyond and The Walking Dead we’ll see as the former continues.
