Lennie James makes his TWD Universe directing debut with Fear TWD 602
TWD legend Lennie James steps behind the camera for Fear TWD 602
Lennie James is a man of many talents. Like most members of the Fear the Walking Dead cast, he is constantly juggling projects and in this week’s episode of Fear TWD he makes his directorial debut in the TWD Universe with “Welcome to the Club.”
The Walking Dead fans know James as Morgan Jones, of course. As Morgan, James has been with the franchise since the very beginning, appearing in the iconic pilot episode “Days Gone By” back in 2010. From there he came back in season 3 for a brief appearance in “Clear” before returning full time in season 6.
Now, in season 6, James steps behind the camera to direct the second episode of the new season. He is the third TWD actor to make the jump to director following Michael Cudlitz and Colman Domingo, and he’s the second actor currently starring in a TWD show to direct an episode. (Domingo was the first actor/director to pull double duty)
I had the great pleasure of being on set in February when James was directing the episode and he was a natural. With all of the shows in the TWD Universe there are a lot of moving parts because the shows film on location and not on sets, so not only do directors have to worry about the scenes being filmed but they have to think about weather, sunlight and darkness. James handled it all with his characteristic poise and smile.
James was the first character in the TWD Universe to cross over between The Walking Dead and the flagship’s first spin-off/companion series Fear the Walking Dead, leaving TWD at the end of season 8 to join Fear TWD beginning in the show’s fourth season.
He’s been a figurehead for the Fear TWD franchise since his arrival. After a cliffhanger in season 5 left fans wondering whether or not Morgan survived we learned in the season 6 premiere that he did survive even though he proclaims to Virginia that “Morgan Jones is dead.”
Be sure to watch Lennie James’ directorial debut in Fear TWD “Welcome to the Club” on Sunday, October 11 at 9pm on AMC.
