Fear TWD continues with episode 602, “Welcome to the Club.” Here’s your recap!

This week’s episode of Fear TWD begins with a group of people with numbers on their backs being led into a warehouse. Virginia’s guard says he’s not into second chances but these people are lucky and they’re getting a shot at redemption. They are given weapons and told that they will have to get through a warehouse full of the dead to show that they are worthy.

One of the men drops his stick. He can’t do it. His eyes are wide and he’s scared to death at what’s inside. The dead can hear them, and they start making more noise behind the door.

The guard aims his gun and tells him that it’s either go inside or die.

He picks up the stick and prepares with the rest of the group as they are told to move forward. The doors are raised, and as soon as they open a thick gooey substance pours out. The door mechanism gets stuck and the walkers start crawling out, grabbing the man at the door and pulling him inside. As the prisoners try to fight, they get stuck in the slippery goo and are pulled inside.

The guard tells the terrified man to fight but he’s frozen in place. The guard tries to get the door and he’s pulled in, too. He struggles with the dead and begs for the man to kill him as he’s eaten alive. Once he’s inside, the door closes again, locking the dead inside with their newest meals.

Cue the credits, here we go! This week’s animated title card features Victor Strand holding a bucket as he looks out at a camp of some kind.

Speaking of Strand, he and Alicia are on latrine duty. He pours the poop into a well and she lights it on fire. They finish up and look over into the town of Lawton. She asks if he wants to jump the fence but he’s not ready to give up the glamorous life they’re living.

The SWAT van rolls up and Marcus, the driver, tells them that the smoke from the fire is blowing toward the canteen. As if they can control that. His passenger tells him to let it go, but Marcus isn’t willing to do so. He wants to be a jerk so he turns on the guns. Strand points out it’s the poop from their latrine and they can shovel it themselves.

Marcus gets out to challenge him, asking if he’s so important then why is he holding the poop bucket? Strand tosses it at Marcus, who pulls a gun. They’re interrupted when Dakota, a young girl, intervenes. She’s told to get back into the town.

Strand and Alicia are handcuffed and taken inside to see Virginia. As they walk, Alicia spots Dakota who says Marcus is a jerk. Dakota says she knows them, and they thank her for the help.

Virginia is getting her hair cut. She tells her people to send rangers to the western territory to see if they can find “him” so it’s easy to assume she’s talking about Morgan. When she pulls the mirror away we see that it’s Daniel who is cutting her hair. She’s ready to see Strand and Alicia, who are led into her office.

Daniel continues to cut her hair, paying no attention when Strand talks to him. Strand didn’t know Daniel was in Lawton.

Virginia invites them to sit down, telling them that they look like they could use a haircut themselves. When Alicia tries to talk to Daniel, he asks if he cut her hair before. The giant red bruise on his head stands out, and Alicia demands to know what they did to him. She reveals that he was desperate to get to his cat so they roughed him up, and now his memories are all jumbled. Thankfully he is still a good barber or else he’d be dead.

It’s chilling to see the once proud and fierce Daniel Salazar reduced to this demure and quiet man who doesn’t want trouble. If you didn’t know better, you’d think he’d been given a lobotomy.

Virginia thought that Strand and Alicia would have had a better start, but Strand assaulted the ranger and there must be consequences. She needs them to do something that could be more suited to their talents. She gives Alicia her weapon back and tells them that they will leave that afternoon. She warns them not to squander their chance.

Once Virginia is gone, Strand talks to Daniel in Spanish, asking him to talk to them. Daniel doesn’t hesitate. He doesn’t know who they are. Strand reminds him of the time he told him to remember who he is, but Daniel doesn’t remember. He says Strand’s pain is weighing on him and he gives him a St. Christopher’s medallion that he found on the dead. His wife had one to protect them from heavy burdens and he says Strand needs it more than he does.

Later, they make the journey in the SWAT van. Alicia can’t believe Daniel doesn’t remember him. Strand has never seen him flinch before, even when he shot Daniel in the face. He can’t believe he gave them the SWAT van, but Alicia reminds him that they would have got it anyway.

They can hear the dead from inside the van, and when they get out they go to the same warehouse and Ranger Hill explains that the key to the future is inside the van, and once they clear it they will find out what it is. A man tries to run away but he’s shot almost at once, so Hill gives Alicia her weapon and tells them to get the job done. Strand doesn’t understand why they don’t just use the van but that would risk whatever is inside, Hill says. He leaves, and Strand and Alicia are left contemplating their mission.

They go inside the warehouse and Charlie walks in wearing one of the numbered jumpsuits. She was sent there after trying to run away – twice. Janis is there, too, and she says the rangers are in charge and they’re riled up after what happened to the night team. There are 9 rangers after the one died. A plan starts to form in Strand’s head.

The man who survived the night team assault explains that the molasses inside made it so much more difficult. Strand notices that he survived and he admits he could have helped but he just watched. Strand and Alicia are called away to get a delivery of supplies, which consists of gardening equipment to help them on the mission.

Strand says this could help them take out the rangers, but Alicia speaks up and says that none of the people were good enough to survive where they were. She thinks he’s hiding something. They’re interrupted when Charlie finds Dakota hiding in the back of the truck. She says she had to get away. She refuses to go back to Lawton, but Strand wants to turn her in. Dakota says she knows what will happen if they move forward with their plan because Virginia is her sister.

Dakota tells them that her sister will kill them if they kill the rangers. People have tried it before. Strand knows Virginia will head there when she learns her sister is missing, but Dakota thinks they can help her because she’s seen the tapes. It turns out that Virginia is obsessed with the tapes. Alicia says things are different. Dakota says she can help because she knows that the warehouse contains a weapon and it’s valuable enough to throw people at it until she gets it. She wants to use the weapon on someone who is “out there”. She knows this because she lives with Virginia and hears everything, including the deal Strand made with her.

Alicia didn’t know about the deal, and Strand follows her out of the tent and explains that he made a deal with Virginia to give her the SWAT van in return for their safety. He did it for himself, though, because he has to remember that he needs to be someone he can look in the eye when this is all over. Alicia stands up and reminds him that they need to keep everyone safe so if they can clear the walkers and get the weapon it would be better. She is resolute on her decision and Strand agrees to follow her lead.

Later, they work to set up a cattle run from the warehouse doors to the front of the building so that the walkers run out in one direction and they can kill them from a safe distance. Strand tells Alicia they can still turn back but she says it will work.

They open the doors and the dead pour out along with tons of molasses. They draw them out by making noise, and they start picking them off and dragging them out of the way in a system meant to keep the field clear. The dead keep coming, and the workers keep dragging them out. Suddenly a walker falls, and they start creating a block that weakens their fence.

Sanjay, the only man to survive from the night crew, can’t close the door. Charlie gets pulled into the dead and they try to free her. Dakota helps to kill the walker and Charlie thanks her. That’s when the rangers arrive and they pull Dakota away from the others. They order them to drop their weapons. When the ranger tries to grab Dakota, she pulls away. Strand says they need to finish the job before Virginia arrives so they allow the wall to come down, creating chaos with the rangers.

The rangers try to shoot at the walkers while Strand opens the gate again and they start killing them. Dakota breaks free from the rangers and hides under the cattle run, and the rangers are quickly picked off by the dead. Strand pulls her back.

Alicia and her group are being overrun so Strand takes Dakota to one of the RVs and goes inside to use the horn to distract them. Sanjay is inside, apologizing that he can’t be more helpful. He tells Strand the walkers will choose fresh meat every time.

Once outside, Sanjay tells Strand that they will get into trouble if they’re found with Virginia’s sister. He’s a coward and Strand knows it so Strand stabs him in the leg and his cries distract the walkers away from the rest of the group. Once they’re out of the warehouse, Alicia and Janis shoot and kill them until they’re all gone.

They did it.

Alicia sees Sanjay. Strand says he tried to stop him, but Sanjay wanted to be a hero.

They hear Virginia on the radio and know she’s on the way, so they go inside the warehouse. It’s empty, save for some junk. There’s no weapon.

Dakota can’t believe it, insisting that she’s not lying. Charlie says she believes her. Strand tells Alicia that Virginia is coming and they won’t be able to hold her off. He’s upset.

Outside, Virginia and her people are gathered. She wants to see her sister, who walks out after the prisoners. Virginia cals her over and looks at the blood on her face. Strand says these people are acting under his guidance. That’s the key to their survival. They are all keys. This is how they survive. He started an army of people who are very capable. Everyone is led away and Virginia is left with Strand, who is tasked with finding a way to make his people follow her.

She gives him a key and tells him he can act as he sees fit, and when the time comes they had better be ready.

Daniel finishes cutting Charlie’s hair. He got all of the molasses out of her hair, but she can’t believe that he doesn’t remember her, or Skidmark, or the warehouse. She looks stricken. He asks if she’s a friend of Ofelia’s. Strand comes in and tells her that the truck is leaving. She grabs the ukulele and tries to play it, and Daniel whistles, knowing it’s the Traveling Wilburys. She says he taught her, but he can’t remember.

Alicia gets into the truck with Charlie. Janis is staying behind because Strand put her on laundry duty. She hugs Alicia and wishes her luck.

Strand sees Alicia and asks for a minute with her. She sees his key and he says Virginia says it gives him power. He was the one who reassigned Alicia to a place far away from him so that she won’t be at risk. He says he didn’t trust his instincts because he couldn’t, not with her there. He needs to forget the person she makes him remember so that means she needs to go away because he needs to go back to the person he used to be. He won’t drag her down. “I need to forget who I am, but you don’t,” he says. He gives her the medallion and tells her not to forget.

She gets into the truck and looks back, not sure what to think.

Strand wipes his tears as he walks away.

Later on, Daniel is leaving Lawton for Paradise Ridge. The ranger sees Strand and welcomes him to “the club”, and when Strand sees Daniel he says he envies him for not being able to remember.

Once they leave the gates, Daniel realizes that he left his good scissors inside. He must have them, so the ranger gets out and goes back to the gate. Daniel gets out and holds his knife, whistling.

A walker comes out and Daniel crouches to kill it. A man steps out and Daniel says he’s much obliged to the stranger, who looks up. It’s Morgan. Daniel says he could use a haircut, and Morgan says he could use his help. Daniel looks around and then greet’s him, saying “it’s good to see you, Morgan.”

It was all an act. Now Daniel and Morgan are a team.
