Where does Negan stand at the end of The Walking Dead season 10?

An unlikely quasi-hero searching for redemption, Negan made strides to become part of the communities. His bond with Lydia, working with Daryl, playing spy for Carol all leading him to make a choice to stay “for now”.  Where does Negan stand at the end of The Walking Dead season 10, with the return of Maggie while still contending with the rightfully earned condemnation of his fellow survivors?

If you had told me at the start of season 10 that I would find Negan interesting, I would have laughed.  I can hold a grudge forever and the loss of Glenn is still a painful one for me. Even I, someone who has despised the character  for several seasons can appreciate what the show is doing with him and how they are progressing with his redemption arc.

How do you redeem a seemingly irredeemable character? Someone who has caused a great deal of pain and suffering to whole groups of people and did so with a gleeful relish? How do you redeem someone who admits to liking the sense of power and control they once had and had again in a limited way with Alpha?

In some ways, Negan seems to enjoy his “outsider” place in the group but still does things to try and be part of that group. Working with Carol and the promise that it would help him earn his freedom as well as his very sweet bond with Lydia showed a different side to the character.

Negan working with Daryl was predictable  story telling and at times confused me as a viewer because I couldn’t get a solid read  on where exactly Daryl stands when it comes to Negan.  Does he see Negan as a means to an end? An unlikely  partner? I’m hoping for some clarity in the upcoming extended season 10 one way or another.

For the most part I feel Negan is in a state of limbo by the end of the season. Yes he has his connection with Lydia  and Judith and he did his part, however reluctantly to help the communities during the final battle but he also knows he’s not gonna be welcomed with open arms.   The best Negan can hope for  at this point is an uneasy alliance.  Some crimes can never be forgiven or forgotten,  but maybe they can be set aside in light of his assistance.

dark. Next. Carol and Lydia's connection in The Walking Dead season 10 finale

After all, regardless of how fans feel one way or another, the show is working to redeem the character and as of right now, Negan is one of the more interesting characters on the show.
