1) Your “Family” Are The People You Care About.

What “family” is varies from person to person, though, for most of us, it’s our blood relations, and the people we love most: Our parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, spouses, children, etc.

In a zombie apocalypse, the term…fluctuates. While you may stick to the usual meaning, your blood family, sadly, may not make it through the outbreak, and your parents, grandparents, siblings, etc., may all die, and, as such, who you think of as your “family” may change.

Conversely, when the outbreak hits, you might be separated from your actual family, maybe for months, maybe even for years, and, the people who become your family are the people you wind up surviving with as the world goes to Hell.

That being said, if I were to define what “family” means in a zombie apocalypse, it would be this: Family are the people you care about; Not the people whose opinions you care about, or something like that, but, the people you would risk your life to save.

The reason I say this is because, while you may be around the people you first wind up with in the apocalypse for a while…they may all be assholes, and, you may just as soon want to cut your arm off with a spoon than lift a finger to help the people you’re stuck with.

Use this as a gauge: Who would you traverse a zombie-infested city to find? Who would you travel across a zombie-infested country to find? Whoever those people are, they are your family.
