There are some truly terrifying moments from AMC’s The Walking Dead.

The world of The Walking Dead is a terrifying place. Not only are there undead monsters around every corner but human threats are out there to fight for supplies and supremacy while the world crumbles around everyone.

AMC’s popular zombie drama show has been around for ten seasons now and fans have enjoyed a lot of ups and downs over the years. Some of them involved their favorite characters in terrible situations while others forced viewers to cover their eyes.

For the purpose of this list, moments with cheap “jump scares” have been removed and instead the focus will be placed on terrifying situations involving an individual or group of characters who are in intense life and death situations.

Let’s get started counting down the 15 scariest moments from the first ten seasons of AMC’s The Walking Dead starting with an encounter from an earlier season with a madman dead-set on having all the power.

15. The Governor follows through on his threat

Season 4 episode 8 was a tough time for the survivors. The secure fences and walls of the prison were no longer a sanctuary when the Governor lost Woodbury and wanted to make the location his own for his protection.

The problem is that the survivors didn’t want to move and the Governor had taken hostages. Standing outside the fence of the prison, he stood with Michonne’s sword in his hands and Hershel kneeling in front of him.

A fan favorite and father who recently overcame an amputated leg, fans were highly invested in this scene, sitting on the edge of their seat wondering if the ruthless villain would actually murder Hershel right in front of his family and friends.

Turns out he would. At the highest moment of tension during the standoff, the Governor declared Rick to be a “LIAR” and swung the sword into Hershel’s neck, not quite beheading the patriarch of the Greene family, but enough to ensure he would die.
