The world gets a little bigger in TWD: World Beyond 106, “Shadow Puppets”. Here’s your recap!

TWD: World Beyond “Shadow Puppets” begins with a story. It’s a story of what life was and what life is like now. The story is conveyed through a puppet show, with Iris serving as the narrator. It’s a harrowing story, tragic in its simplicity, to reveal how much the world has changed for everyone. “The end of the world was our beginning,” Iris says.

Cue the credits, here we go.

The mysterious stranger tries to keep the group at bay, but he doesn’t count on Felix sneaking up behind him. Felix shuts down any possibility of making it out of this. He sends Elton and Silas to check the perimeter, then he asks Iris to search him.

The guy says he was alone. Hope looks at him with suspicion. He says he was taking a leak when he was robbed, and that’s why he doesn’t have any stuff. His name is Percy. Iris asks if he’s hungry.

Later, Percy eats like he hasn’t eaten in a long time. He tells the story of Mike and Tony, two guys he fell in with. He’s not sure what their story is, but they didn’t seem to like each other either. Then they robbed him a few days ago. They’d arrived at a settlement that they’d heard was friendly, but they were wrong. They took off, and when Percy went to sleep he woke up to find that he’d been robbed. He wants to go back to the abandoned town and get his stuff back. Felix suggests that he leave it be, but Percy says that he needs to get his stuff back.

Elton says he understands the need to get his things back, and Hope looks at him with understanding.

Later, Silas finds Felix expanding and reinforcing the walls of their camp. Silas wants him gone, but Felix notes that he doesn’t seem to be in any hurry.

Percy tells a story of being in Wyoming and hearing moans coming. He’s on an overpass so he sat on a car roof and waited for the “has-beens” to pass. He could hear them coming, but then he realized that he wasn’t about to die because the noise was actually a herd of 200 bison passing through. Elton scribbles furiously in his notebook.

He continues his story to say that he was in Orlando and saw a ferris wheel that was covered in pelican nests. Hope points out that he was in Wyoming in the winter, and Orlando in the spring. She realizes that the people stole his car. Iris tries to say it doesn’t matter, but then she sees that he had been lying.

Percy explains that he found a truck with a driver who was going from “what was” to “has been” and it’s not just any car because it’s full of fuel. Iris proposes that they help him get the truck back and then he can help them travel to save their father.

Iris says it’s the two of them against the six of them. Felix points out that they could have guns, and Silas agrees that this is a bad idea, but Percy says he never saw any guns. Percy wants to know that they won’t steal his vehicle and Silas says Iris gave her word, and she agrees. Felix points out that they could just take the truck without him. He proposes that they move out at dawn and help Percy and then he can help them.

The next day they head out. Elton leaves a message for Huck on the raft saying they will be back. As they hike, Elton takes pictures of things he sees and Hope asks what his mother was like. He talks fondly of her, saying how she sang “Tiny Dancer” and that’s where he got his name. Hope is impressed. She asks what he’s going to do with the book when it’s done, and he wants to pass it on so that she will never be forgotten. Hope volunteers to help him finish it.

Iris is surprised to learn that Percy has read Hamlet. He offers to fix Silas’ boot, and Iris asks about other tricks because it is their first time outside the University. He doesn’t get it, but she points out that they made it out of the Blaze and across the Mississippi while he got robbed and fought with a stick. She explains why they’re out there, and he says that having someone to fight for is worth more than a truck.

Silas hangs back with Felix, who agrees that this guy isn’t trustworthy.

When they reach the town they spot someone in the window. Then the truck rolls out and they hide. Percy wants to go after them, but soon it’s clear that something is wrong when the truck is parked nearby. Felix comes up with a plan to scout it out but Percy wants to grab it and hot wire it. Silas says this is a very bad idea, but Felix decides to cover Percy as he goes to the truck. When he gets there, they find the body of the driver in the seat. It’s Tony, and he’s dead.

Percy realizes that they put a plate over the ignition wires. They keys are gone. Iris and the others arrive and see the dead body. They freak out. Percy takes Tony’s knife and rushes off to go find them, and Iris wants to go with them. They committed to helping him and she won’t back down.

Felix takes Elton and Hope with him to scout the building. They find the only building that isn’t boarded up and Percy is there. They agree to scout the building.

More from Undead Walking

Iris can’t deal with waiting, and even though Silas reminds her that she said she would wait behind she doesn’t want to wait for other people to rescue her. He takes offense, and she insists that this is about her. He says Hope will probably try to stop her, but he won’t, and he offers that there could be a back way.

Iris heads inside the building and is immediately startled by a mannequin. She hears a noise and almost kills Percy. She wants to help. Percy says he was about to go upstairs, so off they go.

Outside, Hope says they shouldn’t be there because they were doing fine on foot. Elton thinks anything that would get them to Dr. Bennett faster would be a good thing. He says that Dr. Bennett read his mom’s manuscript before he left and encouraged him to finish it. He thinks he was a lot like his mom, which unsettles Hope so she suggests they focus on the task.

Inside, Felix scouts the building. You can hear an empty inside, and soon it shows up. Felix uses the muzzle of his gun to kill it.

Percy and Iris head upstairs. He points out a room where they had been living and they get closer. Once inside, they hear someone in the bathroom so Percy checks the clothing and finds the keys. On their way out, he spots his stuff and tells her to go start the car and get ready. He’s going to get his stuff and meet them, but then as she runs away she hears him arguing and a gun goes off. She starts to run but decides to go back.

While Silas is looking to see what the gunshot was from, the dead man gets back up and steals their gear.

Inside, Iris realizes that the gear was full of paper and the bathroom had an empty in it.

Silas runs out saying that the dead guy stole their stuff as he drives away. Hope runs after it when Elton realizes his mom’s book is inside.

Iris sees Percy running off and tries to chase him on the roof. Hope catches up but stops when she hears Iris in a trash bin. Percy throws their gear into the truck and rides away.

Felix and Silas arrive just in time, because there are empties inside the trash bin. There is also a herd coming toward them. Felix kills the empties and they look up in time to see Percy and the dead man roll up. The dead man is driving and he says more “has beens” are coming. They get inside and escape the empties.

Later, Felix has Percy and the dead man up against the truck. The dean man tells Percy that “no good deed goes unpunished” and this is what they get for trying to help. Hope thinks they should steal the truck. The dead man says that the fact they came back is as good as it gets.

Much later, they all sit around the fire at the camp. The dead man, Percy’s uncle Tony, is doing a magic trick for Elton, who is completely stunned. Hope sees it as a scammer, but he says he was the resident illusionist in Vegas. He’s been using his tricks to get by, including the makeup job (ie the gunshot to his head) and he’s been helping Percy. Percy says their con allows them to get what they need without hurting people, but Iris isn’t impressed.

When Iris walks away, Percy finds her and asks if she’s going to stay mad forever. She doesn’t think he actually cares, but that isn’t the case. He reveals that they have done the con tons of times, but she was the first person to see him as someone worth saving. That’s what made him come back to help her. Now he needs to prove that he can be like her.

Elton pulls out the manuscript and Hope says she’d love to read it some time. He’s thrilled to hear it. He says he might be the last person left who ever saw his mom, but he’d be glad to know if Hope reads it that she will know his mom, too. She opens it to the picture and stares at it.

Tony works on the truck when Felix comes up. Tony knows he wants the truck, but only he knows where the fuel is. He intends to take them where he needs to go, but what he really wants is to know about the insignia on the jacket. When Felix lies and says it’s from the University, Tony knows better. He peels off a bunch of tape on the truck’s door to reveal the same CRM emblem there. He knows the CRM doesn’t mess around, and they’re close. They’re also very dangerous. He found instructions on how to get to refueling instructions, but for the most part they stay away from CRM and he wants to know if the patch can get them out of trouble. When Felix says it can, Tony says he’ll take them anywhere.

That night, Percy and Tony set up their shadow puppet show for the group. Silas tells Felix that they make starting over look so easy. Iris still can’t process how he lied to her.

The puppet show is about the end of the world. Soon Hope and Iris are wiping tears from their eyes.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL

There’s another end credits scene.

This time, the Dr. Belshaw at CRM is looking at the photo of everyone together. She pulls out Dr. Bennett’s book on advanced immunology and finds a card inside from the girls. It has their drawing on it.

She gets a call, and she says she’s “still working on that” but then she says “it will be taken care of by the time they arrive.” She promises that Dr. Bennett and his security detail won’t be a problem, and she thanks the caller – the Lieutenant Colonel – for her call. She looks up and sees the dead in the next room.

And that’s it for this week’s episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond!
