World Beyond’s Felix is a perfect fit in the TWD Universe
World Beyond star Nico Tortorella’s Felix is the perfect character for the TWD Universe
Where have you been all this time, Felix? One of the newest members of the TWD Universe feels like he has been part of our lives since the start. The TWD: World Beyond security expert now faces the difficult task of guiding a group of untested teens through the wilderness, and from the moment he appeared in the pilot it was clear he’s a perfect fit in the TWD Universe.
Felix is a perfect fit for the TWD Universe, largely because he’s not perfect. He’s the sum of his experience. He’d already been through a lot long before the Night the Sky Fell, and it’s that experience that guides his decisions now.
And let’s face it: Felix has a tough job. He’s watching over a group of untested teens in the middle of the apocalypse. These kids have never been outside the walls of the University (though that’s not their fault) and he’s the one trying to help them survive.
They’re not making it easy for him.
Unlike Carl and Enid and Judith and Charlie and Lydia and countless other TWD Universe kids, the World Beyond kids don’t have the practice experience dealing with dangerous situations that their fellow apocalypse kids have. That said, it’s Felix and Huck who are there to watch over them and keep them safe, knowing that they can’t be persuaded to turn around.
Felix and Huck have a very close and trusting relationship, built on years of working together and having each other’s backs. They’re a dynamic team who are very well suited for this environment. Felix moves smoothly from offense to defense, using years of tactical training to protect the people around him.
And then there’s the actor who brings Felix to life. Nico Tortorella is pure perfection on screen. They’re gruff when the moment calls for it, but at the same time they’re willing to show Felix’s tender side. Felix has a great love for Hope and Iris, and Tortorella’s eyes convey that emotion so beautifully. They’re adept at the action scenes, conveying stress with a low growly voice that Tortorella summons with ease despite the fact that in real life they’re one of the most ebullient people you’ll ever meet.
We already know that World Beyond was only designed to last two seasons, but I really hope that Felix sticks around much longer. Tortorella has such affection and dedication to the role and we need them to continue in the TWD Universe long after World Beyond ends.
To borrow a phrase that became popular in early seasons of The Walking Dead: If Felix dies, we riot.
TWD: World Beyond airs Sundays on AMC.
