June’s decisions in Fear the Walking Dead 606 put her at the top of the food chain

There was a moment in Fear the Walking Dead episode 606 when June could have killed Virginia. It would have been an easy move, especially because Virginia had already reported that she’d been bitten by a walker. However, June made the decision to save her life. It was a controversial move, but one that gives June a lot of power in this ongoing chess game.

As a nurse, June’s sense of duty can be blamed for her decision to save Virginia’s life. It goes against everything medical professionals are taught to save all lives without prejudice.

As a human being trying to protect her family and friends, the decision to leave Virginia alive gets muddier.

One one hand, leaving her alive gives June a lot of room to barter with the Pioneer leader, and to obtain information that can be used to help everyone. June was also able to use her position to get the hospital she’s been asking for, as well as to bring Wendell back from wherever he was.

On the other hand, though, the decision is highly controversial because Virginia is considered to be the “enemy” at the moment. Though June has learned that Virginia might be trying to protect people from a bigger Big Bad out there (namely the graffiti artists and possible CRM), no one else has this information and all her friends know is that she let the one person live who has been causing them so much strife.

Even John has been trying to convince June to leave Lawton, to use the plan Janis left in place to flee. But June opted to stay, which puts her relationship with John at odds as well.

Everything about June’s decision to keep Virginia alive is controversial, but in the end she made a big power move. She could have let Virginia die and she didn’t, so that shows loyalty. Instead of making big demands, her demand for the hospital is technically in line with Virginia’s plan to make a better world so Virginia can’t fault her for it. June could have left, but she didn’t.

Virginia is smart enough to know what kind of asset June is, and that she should be embraced and taken into the fold to be entrusted with important information. June had mere seconds to make this decision, and it was the right decision. Now it’s time to see how it all plays out.

Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays on AMC.
