The Walking Dead: World Beyond season 1 finale is a win for representation

When it comes to diversity and inclusion, The Walking Dead Universe is one of the most diverse and inclusive franchises out there. When it comes to seeing LGBTQIA couples on screen, though, those moments have been few and far between even though several characters across three television shows have featured LGBTQIA characters. World Beyond delivers a big win for LGBTQIA representation in the season finale, building on big moments all season.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond is breaking barriers with its depiction of Felix and Will’s relationship. The couple might have been separated when Will left to protect Dr. Bennett, but Felix has talked fondly of him throughout the season and in the season finale we see more of the moments before Will left, including Will waking up with Felix. The duo is also reunited at the end of episode 110 and their story will lead into season 2.

Will and Felix are not the first gay couple in the TWD Universe, and they’re not the first couple to appear in bed with each other. Prior examples include Victor Strand and Thomas Abigail in Fear the Walking Dead season 2, and we saw Yumiko and Magna in bed in The Walking Dead’s tenth season.

What makes Will and Felix special is that their relationship isn’t relegated to the background. It’s a central part of the story, and one that will continue into the next season rather than fade away. Fans have long regretted not seeing Jesus with a partner, and Tara lost Denise before their relationship had a chance to blossom. Felix and Will are here to stay, and there’s no question that fans will be very happy to see this development in the TWD Universe.

Relationships of any kind are difficult enough in the apocalypse, but seeing that World Beyond is placing a premium on Felix and Will is a step in a very positive direction on a show that has already demonstrated a huge commitment to inclusion and diversity with one of the most diverse casts in the franchise.
