Work is happening on Fear the Walking Dead season 7 according to Scott M. Gimple

With the excitement stemming from the first half of Fear the Walking Dead season 6, fans are wondering whether the first TWD spin-off will be picked up for a season 7. AMC usually sends out renewals either immediately prior to the start of a new season or in the middle of it, but the COVID-19 pandemic has changed how things work. TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple just shed some light on the matter during a recent interview.

Though nothing official has been announced, it sounds like work is underway on Fear the Walking Dead season 7 even though AMC has not officially picked it up yet.

Here’s what Gimple told THR’s Josh Wigler in a recent interview:

"THR: What’s the status of Fear the Walking Dead, which ended one episode shy of its intended midseason finale?Gimple: It was heartbreaking not to be able to carry it through to 608, just because that is an astounding episode. It’s such a big episode in the history of the series. It’ll make an amazing start. [The series is back in production.] We’ve been working for many weeks now, if not months. We’re cranking away on Fear the Walking Dead. We have the rest of season six to finish up while we are working on season seven."

The follow up question was whether they are writing season 7 now, to which Gimple replied, “We are indeed.”

Given that the show should be filming season 7 right now instead of the back half of season 6, there is probably a strong desire to get work done on the next season before contracts need to be renegotiated. This was very likely a major contributing factor in the decision to bring The Walking Dead to an end in 2022, before contracts needed to be renegotiated.

It makes sense that AMC would want work to begin on Fear’s seventh season as soon as possible so that it can help buffer the gap between The Walking Dead bonus episodes and season 11. With the bonus episodes set to air starting February 28, the second half of Fear season 6 could air as soon as mid-April. That would allow filming to begin on The Walking Dead: World Beyond season 2 as well.

At the moment the whole calendar has been disrupted by the pandemic, so what used to be the case isn’t the case anymore. Filming schedules are nothing like they were in the past thanks to all of the hard work that must be done to keep people safe on set amid the pandemic.
