Hershel Greene of The Walking Dead was killed 7 years ago this week
On December 1, 2013, The Walking Dead episode “Too Far Gone” aired, and fans witnessed the shocking death of Hershel Greene. He was the patriarch of the Greene family who not only cared for his own family but brought Rick’s group into his home, and they made a new family unit.
Hershel was played by Scott Wilson, who embodied this character and made him the father/mentor/friend that everyone wanted to be associated with.
He was a farmer who lived on a modest farm with his second wife and their young adult children. When the apocalypse came about, his life didn’t change as much as most. He continued to live off the farm, and they had shelter, water, and food. He also had an advantage because of his profession. He was a veterinarian, and those medical skills came in handy.
It took him a while to come to terms with the fact that the reanimated humans weren’t sick, but were in fact, undead. Once he realized the truth, he became a vital part of Rick’s group.
Throughout his time on the series, he was a fan favorite. He always gave good advice and took care of everyone he came in contact with.
His legacy continues in at least one of the six bonus episodes in the tenth season of The Walking Dead with his grandson’s appearance. In the clip below, you can catch a glimpse of Hershel Jr., the son of Maggie and Glenn Rhee. Maggie has made her return back to the series as well. It will be a wonderful thing to have this child who is part of Hershel and Glenn. Both characters are greatly missed in this series.
It’s sad to think we will never get a flashback of Hershel since Scott Wilson passed away in 2018.
The six bonus episodes of season ten of The Walking Dead are scheduled to start airing on AMC on February 28.
