1) A Gun.

Yep, I’m getting this out of the way right now. If you’re expecting a zombie outbreak, you’re going to need a gun.

Why? …Duh, to shoot zombies with, what else?

In all seriousness, zombies are most dangerous when they get close to you, so, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that your best strategy is to fight zombies from as far away as possible.

Now, I know that guns have a lot of issues that come with them, the first (And biggest) being that, if you don’t already have one, getting one on short notice is damn near impossible, and I am not going to suggest doing anything sketch in order to get one.

The second issue is the fact that…guns are loud. If you have no silencers for them (Which might even be illegal, depending on where you live), just about any gun is going to make a lot of noise, drawing more zombies to you, and maybe even severely damaging your ears!

That said, guns can also be effective when you need to make a quick escape: If you’re in a situation where the dead already know you’re around, and you just need to clear a path to escape, blasting your way through may be a better bet than a slower, quieter weapon, which may give the dead more time to gather.

Long story short: Get a gun, it’ll be a great investment if zombies come knocking down your door.
