2) A Trusty Knife.

Knives are one of humanity’s oldest tools, and, it’s not difficult to see why: It’s one of the most versatile inventions of all time; Hell, some of our own teeth operate on the same principle as knives, so, it’s an idea that goes back hundreds of millions of years.

Now, as it pertains to a zombie outbreak, the value of a knife can not be overstated.

Need to cut yourself out of your own seatbelt (Because someone was in the midst of turning while driving their car and hit you)? Get a knife.
Caught a fish to eat, but need to remove the head and guts? Get a knife.
Cutting up some meat you cooked? Get a knife.
Need to kill a zombie without drawing more of them? Get. A. Knife.

Its versatility makes it easily one of the best items you can have with you in a zombie outbreak, and, it avoids the very the problems that guns present you with: They’re perfectly legal (You don’t need a license for a knife) and they’re completely silent. On top of all that, when a gun runs out of bullets, or a zombie gets in too close for a gun to be that effective, knives can be a quick fix without being cumbersome or requiring secondary accessories to work. You just stick it in a zombie’s brain, pull it out, rinse and repeat.

…I’m serious about that, too: If you only have the one knife, you don’t want to be cutting your steaks with a knife coated in dried zombie blood. I’m not so sure that’s conducive to your prolonged health.
