Fans of The Walking Dead are anxiously awaiting the release of season ten bonus episodes that will begin to air on February 28th on AMC. They are also eager to hear anything about The Walking Dead movie that will see the return of our fearless leader, Rick Grimes. There is speculation that this movie could start filming in the spring of this year, but that hasn’t been confirmed. One thing that is being reported by ComicBook.com is that these movies will be given a “Hard” R rating.

UPDATE: Since this article was published, the movies have been scrapped to make way for a Rick and Michonne spinoff series titled Summit. This series will begin filming in 2023, with a release scheduled in early 2024.

The movies are expected to release in theaters since AMC Studios, and Skybound Entertainment partnered with Universal Pictures to produce these movies. Scott Gimple told ComicBook.com that we could expect a very different Rick from what we know. Rick has been through a lot since his last appearance on the series. It has been over 6 years so who knows what he has been through during that time. We can imagine it has been traumatic because what else would keep him from returning to his family? Something major.

Rick Grimes was taken by a CRM helicopter in season nine. He is believed to be dead by all of his friends and family. But, viewers know that he was taken with the assistance of Jadis/Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh) to parts unknown.

Michonne (Danai Gurira) did discover some information giving her hope that he is still alive, which led to her going off to search for him. This was also her departure from the series. Perhaps she will also make an appearance in the movies.

When Gimple was asked about theatrical releases in an interview with THR, he said if we still have those. Referring to movie theaters and all the closings due to the pandemic. But, he talked about other ways to tell the tales that fans want. He talked about a possible mini-series that is six episodes long that could possibly be tied into Tales of the Walking Dead.

The series still has a lot ahead of it, with the final season being 24 episodes long. This will be like getting two seasons in one. Since filming will take much longer due to precautions that keep the cast and crew safe from COVID-19, it could be a while before we see the end of the series.

There are many other avenues the writers are looking at to continue the stories, including the Carol and Daryl spin-off and the Tales of the Walking Dead series. The movies are just one piece of The Walking Dead world, but a piece that fans are eager to see, whether in the theater or on AMC.
