4) Fancy Cars

Having a car once a zombie outbreak begins is critical because, ideally, it can get you, your family, and all the supplies you can carry, away from a zombie hub as fast as possible.

Ideally.

The thing is, a lot of cars are not ideal for a zombie outbreak, particularly luxury cars, sports cars, and supercars.

Why? Well, first of all, while they are fast…they’re not very roomy, granted, they’re not supposed to be, but, once there are zombies around, you need a car that can fit a lot of stuff! If you can’t bring the people you care about with you, or bring the supplies you need to survive…it’s not a very good car for what you need.

Secondly, the same idiots who think a zombie outbreak is a good excuse to loot may also think it’s a good time to steal a fancy car, maybe your car. Even if they do it without hurting you (Which is by no means guaranteed), you’re still going to be without a car unless you got a more utilitarian vehicle, in which case, you should have been using that to begin with.

Thirdly, there’s a very good chance that you won’t even get to use such a car for its intended purpose because of the situation. If you leave when people start panicking, you’ll probably run into huge crowds of people or massive traffic jams, which means you’re going to moving at, if you’re lucky, speeds of around five miles per hour, making your car no better than any old sedan. At least in a truck, if you hit a cluster of abandoned cars, it should be heavy enough to push them out of the way. I doubt you can do that in a sports car.

Finally, even if you could drive at the speeds such cars are meant for, you have to figure that doing so will burn through gas wicked fast. It would be one thing when you could just stop off at any gas station and fuel up, but that won’t be so easy once a zombie outbreak starts. Between people hoarding gas, stations not getting resupplied, and, potentially, not having the means to actually get gas from the pumps even if there’s gas to get, the last thing you want to do is accelerate being stranded in the middle of nowhere, or with a bunch of zombies chasing you.

In the end, you’re better off with a truck, or a van, or a station wagon or something like that…maybe a Charger. They’re pretty good for this.
