1) A Compass

Now, realistically, it doesn’t need to be winter for a compass to be useful once a zombie outbreak starts. Whenever you’re wandering around on foot and don’t know exactly how to get from where you are to where you’re trying to go, a compass can be handy. That said, they can be especially useful once winter hits.

Why? Well, the answer is fairly obvious: Snow.

Normally, if you don’t have a compass, you could use the sun’s position to give you an idea of what direction you’re heading in and what direction you need to head in. This is all fine and dandy most of the year but during a snowstorm? No way. You won’t even be able to see the sun, much less navigate with it, and since you won’t be able to just wander around in freezing temperatures all day, you’ll need to have some idea of where you’re going.

Worse still, even when it isn’t snowing, it might be so cloudy and hazy (Something that happens a lot in winter…) that you still can’t find the sun in the sky, so you’re better off just having the compass with you at all times because you never know when the sun may just decide to call in a snow day.
