1) Speed

Even though zombies are generally depicted as being slower than molasses in January, the fact remains that, to survive, you’re going to need to be fast.

You see, even if we were to assume zombies were slow if they’re following you (Which likely means they’ll draw more zombies to you in the process), being just faster than them is not going to get them off your tail. Being bare minimum just means that they’re going to keep following you until you get exhausted, and then, their lack of speed won’t matter because they won’t have to stop, and you will.

So, to be able to shake the dead, you need to be fast, fast enough that not only can you outrun them, but, if need be, you can create enough distance between you and them to ensure they lose sight of you and gives you the chance to actually escape them, and not have them just follow you everywhere, slowly.

You also need to be fast if the dead corner somewhere or invade your base. You need to react quickly to hold them off or escape your surroundings before the dead surround you.

Additionally, the dead won’t be the only thing you have to contend with. If you happen to be unfortunate enough to encounter hostile people, you’ll need to be really fast to shake them off, especially if you don’t have the means to fight them on your own.

If you can’t be fast while you’re alive, you’ll discover that the only thing you’ll be fast at is being dead.
