Looking back on 3 iconic couples from The Walking Dead comic series
By Sara Large
The Walking Dead television series has had many amazing friendships and relationships, but without the inspiration from the amazing comic source material, the show wouldn’t be what it is today. For this article, the main focus will be couples that never happened in the main show or ones that didn’t end up the same. So apologies, but no Glenn and Maggie or Abraham and Rosita as their relationships align so well with what the tv show did.
Before hopping into the three main iconic couples, there are a few honorable mentions. One is a couple that hasn’t happened yet in the TV series but still could, and that is Princess and Mercer. Both of these characters were introduced very late in the run, but fans adored them all the same. This duo is even seen in the series’s very last issue, still happily together walking a little dog, so cute!
Next up are Andrea and Dale. While fans and even the characters in the comics may initially question this relationship due to the age gap, it’s clear they love each other. Andrea was crushed when Dale met his demise, even wearing his hat for a long time after. Dale was Andrea’s first love after the apocalypse began, and they were a lovely couple.
Last on the list of mentions is a couple that viewers only got to see in one issue. It’s clear they created a happy family after enduring their childhood around walkers, and that is Carl and Sophia. While fans might have been a little sad Carl didn’t end up with Lydia in the end, it’s clear Carl and Sophia are very much in love and have a great life. It would have been great if fans got to see how they got together, but the love is there, and that is what counts.
On this countdown to Valentine’s Day, three amazing couples from The Walking Dead comic series will be highlighted for what they added to the story.
3. Magna and Yumiko
When Magna and Yumiko were first created for the comic series, they were not together. Creator Robert Kirkman has publicly said that these two were not going to be a couple in the beginning. He then realized that there had never been a lesbian couple throughout the comic run, and he wanted to add in this piece of representation.
While Yumiko and Magna did have a relationship on the TV series, this couple is included because of just how different their relationship is in the comics. While on their way to Commonwealth, unbeknownst to them at the time, of course, they set up camp to rest. In the middle of the night, Eugene accidentally stumbles upon them kissing. The next day Yumiko announces to the group they are lesbians, which does hurt Magna as she was outed without her permission.
In the comics, it is told that Magna feels hesitant about this part of her life because of the judgment she has faced in her past. Her father was homophobic, which caused her to want to hide her relationships from the world. Eventually, she grows comfortable, and Yumiko’s announcement doesn’t cause a rift between the two.
Another thing that makes this relationship so different is the fact this couple never breaks up. In fact, they are an absolute power couple in the comics. Magna is a leader who Rick greatly respects, even leaving her in charge of things when he is away. Yumiko is the first to back up Magna, and their dynamic together is poetry. In the very last issue of the comic run that takes place decades into the apocalypse, they are shown to have grown old together as a happy couple. Fingers crossed they have a similar fate in the show.
2. Jesus and Aaron
Jesus and Aaron are a couple that many fans wanted to see make it to the tv series. In the comics, Jesus and Aaron actually make it to the end of the comic series. Much like Yumiko and Magna, they are shown at the very end happily growing old together.
This relationship may have been hinted at in The Walking Dead tv show, but no confirmation was ever given that these two were an item. This will always be a sore spot for comic fans. Not only did viewers not get to see this couple on tv, but the show didn’t use Jesus to his full potential and killed him off far too soon.
In the comic series, as individuals, they are amazing people. They are the best of the best. They are fiercely loyal, they are strong fighters, they are kind, loving, and intelligent. These two men were made for each other, and it’s no shock that their relationship endures the test of time. The television series missed out big time, not showcasing what these two could accomplish together.
1. Andrea and Rick Grimes
Topping off this list is none other than Andrea and Rick Grimes. Rick Grimes is an absolute legend in television and comic book history. He is a character that most people know about, regardless if they watch The Walking Dead on TV. Without comic Rick, fans wouldn’t have the vast Walking Dead universe we have today. In the comic series, Rick is an intelligent, strong, and brave individual who is naturally put into a leadership position.
Make no mistake, though, without Andrea, Rick wouldn’t be half the character he ends up being. Andrea is also a legend. She is the only character in the entire comic run that got a full-page apology from Robert Kirkman in her death issue. She was as strong as they come, she was the glue that held everyone together and was simply just an amazing character.
When two strong-willed characters like this come together, they either hate each other or love each other, and fortunately for fans, these two were the perfect fit. They wouldn’t hesitate to call the other out if needed, and they were the first two on-site if anything happened to anyone. In the end, neither made it to the point where society had truly moved past the apocalypse, and that is a shame, but they will never be forgotten.
Without these two, society might not have been able to push through to a better future. While they might not have made it to the end, fans know that Rick and Andrea would have been thrilled to know that they paved the way for Carl to grow older and have a family of his own. If there is a comic book heaven, Rick and Andrea were certainly looking down on Carl and his daughter in the rocking chair, smiling fondly at the beautiful ending.
