The Walking Dead recap of season 10, The World Before
By Renee Hansen
We are looking back at all the episodes in season ten of The Walking Dead. These recaps will lead us to the streaming premiere on AMC+ that will start on February 21. For those who don’t have AMC+, the episodes will start to air on AMC on February 28.
The episode starts with a flashback to when Dante meets with Alpha, and she tells him he will need to be her eyes and ears within Alexandria. We see many of the actions he took to cause problems there. In her sweet sing-song voice, she promises him a special place among the Whisperers when Alexandria falls.
Next, we see him over Siddiq’s dead body, he is about to stab him in the head to make sure he doesn’t reanimate, but Rosita enters carrying Coco. Rosita doesn’t trust him, and when he figures that, he shows her the knife he is carrying. Everything moves fast; as Rosita kicks Dante’s ass, walker Siddiq heads towards a crying Coco. Rosita stabs Dante and then Siddiq and finishes working Dante over.
Dante always put off a weird vibe, but it was shocking to know he was working for Alpha. It explains the many things that have gone on in Alexandria.
The World Before
Aaron meets Gamma on the bridge, and they discuss the baby that the Whisperers abandoned at Hilltop. She explains that the baby is her nephew and she wants to see him. Aaron says they won’t allow that. She tells him she will give him information in exchange for the chance to see her nephew, who has been named Adam.
Back in Alexandria, Daryl punches a tied-up Dante. Gabriel, Rosita, Carol and Daryl are interrogating Dante to find out what Alpha’s plan was in having him in the community. He says that Siddiq wasn’t part of the plan, but he recognized who he was, and he had no choice but to kill him.
Aaron enters and gets caught up on the situation. He tells them that Gamma/Mary told him where Alpha is keeping her horde. They decide that finding Lydia is vital as they feel her presence protects them from Alpha.
Daryl and Carol are at odds regarding how Carol handled Lydia. Carol stands by her actions, saying that showing the Whisperers that Alpha lied about Lydia’s death benefits the communities.
Scott, Michonne, Judith and Luke are traveling on the road, and Scott notices clean footprints recently made. They are looking out for a possible Whisperer scout.
Judith shows Luke her journal that she is keeping to chronicle what they experience. Luke tells them there is an excellent library in the town ahead. Judith talks Michonne into stopping for new books, as she has read all of the books in Alexandria.
Michonne gets a radio call from Carol.
Luke is so focused on books that he gets attacked by walkers, and a stranger helps by killing some of them and then runs off. He can kill the remaining walkers, and Scott takes off after the stranger. Michonne finds the stranger’s bag and informs Luke and Judith that Siddiq is dead and they have to get home.
At Siddiq’s funeral, Gabriel speaks words to comfort those mourning this loss. Rosita sits next to the grave as everyone looks on.
Carol and Ezekiel have an awkward moment. He asks if she needs help going to Alpha’s horde, she tells them they have enough people. She asks him if there is anything else wrong, and he hesitates but still doesn’t tell her about his cancer.
On the outside of the wall, Rosita encounters some walkers, and flashbacks of Siddiq’s death cause her to go wild on them. Eugene steps into the scene and lends a hand. He offers his condolences to her loss of Siddiq.
Gabriel watches a video of Dante when he first comes to Alexandria. Rosita enters and explains to Gabriel why she is covered in blood. She talks about how she used to feel that it would be fine if she dies, but now, she has Coco to think of. She is worried she has become weak. She gets mad at Gabriel for not paying attention to what she is going through. He explains that he has bigger things going on at the moment. Lydia needs found, and Dante needs to be dealt with.
Aaron and Gracie share a sweet moment using his license plates to run through the US city capitals. She wants to hear about California. He tells her a story when he was hiking and found some Indians ruins. The story he tells of these people mirrors Alexandria and the people residing there.
Michonne’s group arrives at Oceanside, and Virgil, the man who saved Luke in the library, is captured as he was sneaking around Oceanside. Suddenly a pack of walkers comes out of nowhere, and the fitting begins. Michonne loses sight of Judith.
Gabriel enters the jail area of Alexandria to talk with Dante. Gabriel explains that Siddiq was like a brother to him, and Dante has ruined his family forever by his actions. Gabriel tells him that he wasn’t always brave as they discuss second chances. Gabriel pulls out a knife and stabs Dante repeatedly.
Back at Oceanside, Virgil tries to escape, and Judith takes him down with a swipe of her little katana. She calls Michonne over, and Virgil looks shocked at the sight of the mother-daughter team with their katanas pointed at him.
Rosita, looking out the window, sees Gabriel emerge from where the jail cell is. He looks defeated, and she can tell something is wrong.
Daryl, Carol and Aaron come upon Kelly, Jerry, Magna, and Connie along the roadside. They travel into the night and cross Alpha’s border. Daryl is cautious, but Carol is reckless and almost steps on a trap. Daryl tells Carol that she needs to open up to him because he is the one she comes to when she needs someone. This scene shows the depth of the relationship between these two characters.
Gabriel and Rosita burn Dante’s body. As they watch him burn, they comfort each other.
We see Virgil bound and lying on the ground. He sees Judith reading a book he intended for his child. This angers him. Michonne talks to Virgil about what he is really doing at Oceanside. He explains he left his home looking for supplies and is only trying to make his way back. After the news of Dante infiltrating Alexandria, Michonne is suspicious of his presence.
He tells her there are weapons on the island he lives on. Michonne knows these weapons could end the Whisperer war and that she would be the one that goes to retrieve them. She explains this to Judith, so she understands Michonne will do this alone.
As Daryl and the group come to the ravine where Mary told them the horde would be, and it is empty. Daryl gets angry, feeling they could have spent that time looking for Lydia instead of coming up empty.
Michonne explains her plan to Virgil, and they agree to have her accompany him back to his island to retrieve the weapons. She explains to everyone what her plan is, and they agree it is a good idea. We see Michonne and Virgil sailing away.
Back in the woods, Carol sees Alpha and follows her. Daryl and the gang follow. Alpha leads Carol through the woods and into a cave. The others fight off walkers, and Daryl tells them to get Carol out of the cave. Daryl follows, and the cave is pitch blacks, he falls, and we see the rest of the group and hear the horde of walkers in the bottom of the cave. They are trapped.
It was an amazing mid-season finale that will set the tone for the rest of the season.
