Happy Birthday to The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira
By Renee Hansen
The Walking Dead’s badass katana welding actress, Danai Gurira, celebrates a birthday today! We want to extend our wishes for a happy day.
Gurira’s character Michonne left the series in season ten to look for her true love and father of her children, Rick Grimes, who she had previously thought died in an explosion. Upon receiving news that he didn’t die then, she immediately headed off in search of him.
Although her character won’t be seen in the final season of the series, fans of Michonne are hopeful to see her in The Walking Dead movies that are rumored to start filming as soon as Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes, can leave his homeland in the UK who are on strict lockdowns due to the pandemic.
Many people across the multiple fandoms she is involved in have wished her a happy birthday via social media.
What future projects will Danai Gurira be involved in?
She is well known for her role as Michonne, but Gurira is also a key player in the Black Panther’s realm of the Avengers world.
She plays Okoye, who is a high-ranking member of the Wakandan armed forces. She serves as the General of the Dora Milaje, which is an elite group of female bodyguards. She has been featured in Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Black Panther II is in the works, and there are conflicting reports as to whether or not Gurira will return in her role as Okoye. With the sudden, heartbreaking death of Chadwick Bosman, who played the king of Wakanda, T’Challa, the new film will have to be reworked as Bosman’s character will not be recast. Hopefully, we will see the return of Okoye.
Over the years, Gurira has received many nominations for awards for her work on The Walking Dead and Black Panther. She gives such life to her characters, making her a fan favorite.
She is an award-winning playwright, actress and activist, who not only sets the example for other women but backs that up with all the amazing organizations she is a part of.
In 2015 she started the Love Our Girls campaign. Below is the quote she has on that sight explaining her vision.
"AS AN ACTRESS, I HAVE THE GOOD FORTUNE OF BEING ABLE TO PLAY A COMPLEX, STRONG AND FLAWED WOMAN. AS A WRITER, SCRIPTING NARRATIVES IS MY ACT OF RESISTANCE, MY WAY OF BRINGING THAT UNHEARD AFRICAN FEMALE VOICE FRONT AND CENTER AND ALLOWING IT TO MANIFEST ITS ASTOUNDING VALUE. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PASSION FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS, A HOPE TO SEE THEM FUNCTION ON THE SAME PLAYING FIELD AS MEN AND HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES AND APPROPRIATE PROTECTIONS. I WANT TO BE MORE THAN AN ACTRESS AND STORYTELLER BUT AN ADVOCATE FOR WOMEN, NOT ONLY IN UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES BUT ALL OVER THE WORLD."
Happiest of days to Danai Gurira on her special day from all of us at Undead Walking.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC on February 28.
