7) Hate

Don’t get me wrong: If some hostile rolled up you in a zombie apocalypse, and murdered your friends or your family, your hatred of such people would be totally justified. Anyone telling you otherwise would be a liar.

However, that isn’t what I’m talking about. You see, as idiotic as it might be, at least in the early stages of a zombie apocalypse, there will be people who will cling to the worst elements of the pre-apocalypse world. They will carry with them old resentments, grudges, and hatreds of people who likely never did anything to anyone they knew or cared about (Never mind them directly).  With no one around to stop them, they will likely act on these misplaced feelings, maybe even in some small way, as a means of feeling like they have a modicum of control in a world where they actually have none.

At that point, whomever they do this to will become very much the sort of person I spoke of at the very beginning: The victim of a hostile who attacked people they cared about for no reason and would now be justified in whatever they did to the perpetrator.

This is the problem with hanging on to old, pointless grudges about things that aren’t important in the face of a zombie horde that doesn’t care about said grudges or were only relevant in a world that no longer exists. When you carry them over, all you do is lay the groundwork for a vendetta which, if you’re the one hanging onto the grudge in the first place, you likely won’t see the conclusion of. Sooner or later, if you carry out this grudge on someone who didn’t share it, they will end the grudge the hard way…by burying you.

When the zombie apocalypse begins, the world that came before it gets destroyed, and with it, a lot of our (Relatively) petty differences. The dead won’t care about why you dislike this person or that person because they’ll just see all of you as food.

Maybe we should worry more about the things trying to consume us all rather than the things that divide us.
