Fear The Walking Dead has been recognized for authentic representation
By Renee Hansen
Fear The Walking Dead will return to AMC on April 11 with the back half of season six. We saw the most recent episode of Fear TWD in November 2020, and viewers are anxious to see what will happen next.
The series has also started filming for its seventh season, which is expected to release some episodes before the end of 2021.
Deadline reports that the Ruderman Family Foundation, a disability rights group, has recognized Fear TWD for its inclusion of Daryl “Chill” Mitchell in its cast. Mitchell was in a motorcycle accident 20 years ago that left him paralyzed from the waist down.
His character Wendell was paralyzed at the age of 10 when he saved another boy from being hit by a car. This foundation recognizes TV and film productions that feature actors with disabilities in substantial speaking roles.
What is the seal of approval that has been given to Fear The Walking Dead?
The Ruderman Family Foundation believes in inclusion and understanding of all people. They have recognized Fear TWD for featuring an actor with a disability by bestowing The Ruderman Seal of Approval for Authentic Representation to the series. They feel that full inclusion in pop culture is vital to the entertainment industry.
Casting director Sharon Bialy told Deadline, “We are incredibly proud to have cast ‘Chill’ and have been huge fans of his for a long time. We are so proud of our showrunners and AMC to do whatever was needed to get ‘Chill’ to set without one bit of resistance. He brought his talent, personality, and great joy to the role and all those who work with him.”
Even tho his injury changed his life; he never let it hinder his career. He received encouragement from his family and friends, including Denzel Washington and Chris Tucker, to continue as an actor.
Mitchell started the Daryl Mitchell Foundation to raise awareness of spinal cord injuries. He also serves as the Minority Outreach spokesman for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.
In 2010 he won an NAACP Image Award for outstanding actor in a comedy for his work in the FOX series Brothers. Mitchel starred alongside Michael Strahan, CCH Pounder, and Carl Weathers in the series.
Congrats to Fear the Walking Dead for this honor. Be sure to catch the second half of season six of Fear The Walking Dead on April 11 on AMC.
