Tom Payne played Paul Rovia, aka Jesus on The Walking Dead, from season six until season nine. During the midseason finale of season nine, The Walking Dead fans received a shock when Jesus was killed by what appeared to be a walker.

When Payne left The Walking Dead, he was cast as the lead character in Fox’s Prodigal Son. Payne plays Malcolm Bright, the son of a serial killer, Martin Whitly, known as the Surgeon. Bright is a former FBI profiler who now works for the NYPD. After ten years, Bright is reunited with his father when he must consult him while investigating a murderer who is a copy cat of his father.

Prodigal Son is currently in its second season and has received rave reviews from critics and viewers alike.

Today Payne shared a photo on his IG account with the caption, “Two years ago today Malcolm Bright was born, and a new adventure began.”

Fans miss Payne’s character on The Walking Dead

Jesus came on the scene of TWD series, and the introduction mirrored his comic book right down to his outstretched arms, long coat, and stocking cap. As in the comics, Jesus was mistrusted by Rick at first but eventually became a trusted leader in the communities.

Although it was a shock and many fans were not happy with the fact Jesus was killed, his death was one of the most amazing in the series. As the group fights off a horde of walkers in a fogged cover cemetery there, seem to be whisperers around them. Jesus tells the group to go as he proceeds to finish off the last of the walkers. As he raised his sword to take one out, he is stabbed by the walker as it whispered, “You are where you do not belong,” to the shock of Jesus and the viewers.

It was a death reminiscence of earlier TWD episodes when the deaths were shocking and unexpected. The scene was beautifully shot and an excellent way to introduce the Whisperers.
