The Walking Dead episode 1019, “One More”, was a brilliant return to the kind of storytelling fans came to expect in earlier seasons of the show. It had all of the elements of a zombie story, from horrifying walkers to people trying to survive at all costs. We had a chance to chat with Robert Patrick about his appearance on the show as Mays, the mysterious man who plays a game of Russian roulette with Gabriel and Aaron.

Patrick was very quick to express his gratitude about being part of the show and his appreciation for the cast and crew, with special thanks to director Laura Belsey, who brought the episode to life in stunning fashion.

During our conversation, Patrick talked about how Mays is the sum of the many memorable roles he has played over the years, and he would have enjoyed having more time to flesh out the role.

“One More” was a fantastic episode because it highlighted the moral ambiguity in the world of The Walking Dead. Mays is a complex character; sure, he held Aaron and Gabriel hostage but they were in his space eating his boar and drinking his booze. Then again, he was keeping his twin brother captive upstairs, chained beside his brother’s dead wife and child.

But was there more to the story?

Unfortunately, Gabriel made an executive decision to kill Mays before he could turn on them again. But it’s hard to say whether Mays would have been dangerous or if he would have been a possible ally. While it’s hard to trust someone who keeps a man chained in the attic, there are always two sides to a story.

Moral ambiguity aside, Patrick brought a breath of fresh air to The Walking Dead 1019 with his dynamic performance and we hope he shows up on Tales of The Walking Dead so that we can learn more about his past.
