The Walking Dead finally name drops Mercer from Commonwealth!
By Sara Large
Season 10 Episode 20 of The Walking Dead brought fans a huge surprise as major character Mercer from the Commonwealth arc in the comics gets a name drop! It was only a couple of short weeks ago that Michael J Shaw was officially announced as the person who would be playing him in the TV series. Though viewers have yet to get a glimpse of that beautiful red armor, the fact a character has mentioned him is an exciting moment.
Taking any form of ads or commercials out of the equation, the moment you can hear this is about 6 minutes into the episode. Princess is stuck inside her train car when she notices what appears to be burlap sacks. She stops her search as she hears guards outside chatting and walking by. Viewers can hear radio chatter, laughter, and “copy” over the walkies.
If fans rewatch with the sound turned up, it appears one guard says he “can’t wait to tell Mercer” before the conversation gets too fuzzy. While the captions do not state any words other than “copy” and laughter, it’s clear someone is excited to tell Mercer about something.
To back up this name drop is the fact that Mercer was softly introduced the same way in the comics. After a group of guards encounters what they call a magenta swarm, one of them notes that Mercer will be sad he missed out. Michael J Shaw himself actually teased magenta swarms on his Instagram.
The Walking Dead bonus 6 episodes just dropped a huge surprise as a Commonwealth guard is heard mentioning Mercer’s name!
Mercer is a major character in the comics because of the amount of pull he has with his people. Without diving into spoilers, he has a very commanding personality, and fans love him. If he stays the same as the source material, fans are in for a treat! Fans are now crossing their fingers that when the season 11 trailer drops, they get a glimpse of this awesome leader.
