AMC aired “The Calm Before” episode of The Walking Dead years ago, but the fandom hasn’t forgotten how it made them feel. During this episode, emotions went from the high of the fair to the low of the pike victims scene, and then lower as we witnessed Carol losing another child.

The Whisperer’s arc of The Walking Dead is one of the best of the series. The casting of Alpha (Samantha Morton) and Beta (Ryan Hurst) couldn’t have been more perfect. This group’s brutality was brilliantly conveyed, and viewers experienced the same fear as the characters experienced.

Fans of the comic book knew the pike scene was coming, but many viewers were shocked as they had no idea. All of the pike victims meant something to someone, and it was a beautifully emotional scene. The lives lost were  Ozzy, Alek, D.J., Frankie, Tammy Rose, Rodney, Addy, Enid, Tara, and Henry.

If you want to relive the scene, you can view it here.

Why did Alpha put heads on pikes?

Viewers see Michonne helping Saddiq walk after they found him beaten and tied to a tree. They left alive to tell the horrific tale of what would come next. The look on Michonne’s face tells viewers something is very wrong.

As the group comes upon the pikes, you can see the confusion on their faces. Their thoughts are along the lines of “What am I looking at?” They slowly walk up the hill, still trying to figure out what is going on.

As the camera pans closer, we can see hair blowing in the wind and the blood-soaked pike holding up each of the dismembered heads. Alpha would set these heads along the border she had set as warning to the communities.

Michonne, Siddiq, Yumkio, Daryl, and Carol look in total disbelief at the sight before them. This is when things get really emotional. The scene flashes between the fair as the missing people are being searched for and then the scene flashes back to the pikes as each victim is revealed. The filming was fantastic giving viewers a wild ride of emotions.

This outstanding episode set up many other stories, especially Carol’s. One again, we had to view Carol losing a child, which set off a chain reaction of revenge that she would successfully pull off with the help of Negan.
