The Walking Dead, Survival Rule Of The Week: The Littlest Things

4) Small Problems Can Become Bigger If You Let Them.
One of the most aggravating things in a zombie apocalypse is how it forces you to, for the most part, be in a state of constant vigilance.
I’m not simply talking about having to be on the lookout for the previously addressed vermin like rats and cockroaches because of how much they can contaminate or destroy your food supply and spread disease. Even general decay needs to be kept in check because such things can easily turn your otherwise secure home base into a zombie buffet.
Think of it like this: If there is some amount of rot in the perimeter of your base, over time, that rot can expand, and things like rats can sneak in. Once one does it, more will follow. Eventually, the rats’ movement (Or just general movement of members of your group, which become increasingly visible as the decay expands) will draw the attention of any zombies in the area.
Once zombies see something alive at those points of decay, they will go after it, either trying to get in or knock down the thing they see things through: Walls, doors, fences, etc.
You might be able to ignore problems like this for a while, but, eventually, they’ll get worse. It doesn’t even need to be zombie-related: Things like a leaking roof can eventually cave in, leaving the building exposed to the elements.
Whatever the problem might be — A zombie marching its way towards your base, for example — even if it’s small…it won’t stay small forever. If you let the problem fester, it will eventually get worse, meaning that dealing with it will require much more work, put you in danger, or even get to a point where you can’t even deal with it anymore.
Frankly, this is the issue with so many small problems, be they in a zombie apocalypse or not, because what we think is small may not be. The things we don’t think about, the things that don’t appear threatening, the things we overlook can become far more important than we initially believe, and our failure to see their importance when we have the chance to can be our undoing.
Don’t ignore the little things in a zombie apocalypse. They can be what saves your life or what ends it.
And that’s your Walking Dead, Survival Rule Of The Week!
