3) Mays’s Brother

All we know about Mays’s brother is that he was Mays’s twin, had a wife, and a daughter that the three of them had survived the outbreak along with Mays. And, at some point, he’d tried to kill Mays for a can of food, failed, and was eventually forced to play Russian Roulette with his wife and daughter.

The thing about that is, outside of the Russian Roulette and the killing of his wife and daughter, all the rest of it is what Mays told us about his brother. We never heard anything from Mays’s brother himself or anyone they might have survived with, only what Mays told us. This means it’s entirely possible that what we were told about Mays’s brother might be a lie.

Let’s assume, for argument’s sake, that Mays’s brother didn’t betray him. That would mean he had been imprisoned by his twin brother and forced to play Russian Roulette with his wife and daughter.

And, since we’re already dipping our toes in, let’s go a step further and ask a question: If you were Mays’s brother, and your twin had just turned on you for a can of food and had imprisoned you, your wife, and your daughter, and forced you to play Russian Roulette, what would you do? Would you kill yourself and leave your family to some mysterious fate at the hands of your backstabbing (Possibly crazed) brother? Or, would you ensure they didn’t face whatever your brother had planned for them and ensure that only you were there to suffer?

If we’re assuming that Mays lied about his brother, I think he killed his wife and daughter, not out of a selfish desire to save his own skin, but rather to spare them from being his brother’s prisoners for the rest of their lives. When Father Gabriel and Aaron found Mays’s brother and tried to free him, he stole his brother’s revolver and committed suicide. Before he did, he took one last look at his family, whose corpses had been keeping him company for a very long time. You see, I think what he was doing was looking at what he hoped would be waiting for him on the other side: The family he’s been forced to kill by his insane brother so long ago. I think he saw his hell finally ending, being given a chance to reunite with the only people left in the world that he cared about, saw his chance, and took it.

So…who’s the most redeemable?

This is tough because we have so little in the way of concrete evidence. We know the Commonwealth has a substantial population to protect, but barring that, we know little else about them. We know a decent bit about Mays, but while he was trying to find decent people, his method of going about it was barbaric, to the point that the Commonwealth looks practically angelic by comparison.

As for Mays’s brother, we know even less about him, and most of what information we do have about him could, for all we know, be a bunch of dirty lies!

So, with that in mind, I have to go with the one group of people we know didn’t kill anybody this season: The Commonwealth.

So far, all we’ve seen of them is a well-organized, fairly advanced community with a large population to look after and do what they have to to protect it. Their methods for weeding out hostiles might not be entirely savory, but with the sort of population they need to protect, it stands to reason that they would use whatever tricks they had in their arsenal to do it.

Considering the things we’ve seen Daryl and Carol do to protect the group, I think we can forgive a little “Good cop, bad cop,”…don’t you?

But, what do you guys think? Was there another villain in these last six episodes who was more redeemable? Was there someone I didn’t even think of who you thought belonged here? Let me know in the comments!
