13) After he and John clear the walkers from the bridge, Morgan says, “That is some ugly mustard.” This is the same thing John said after Al mowed down a couple dozen walkers using the MRAP’s machine guns back in the season four premiere episode, “Who Are You Now?”.

14) John is the seventeenth named character to die this season, the second character to die this episode, the second member of the convoy to die, and the second person that Dakota has directly killed (Third person if you count indirect kills since Janis got executed to cover for her).

15) On top of that, John is also the second (Named) member of the convoy to turn this season.

16) In hindsight, John’s death makes the image of the title sequence a nice bit of visual misdirection: The title image is clearly meant to parallel Rick, who we know survived his ordeal, by doing so, it subtly makes the audience think that John would survive as well, which then sets them up perfectly for when John death is finally revealed.

17) This episode gets its name for the door to John’s cabin, which serves a dual purpose in the episode (And parallels John’s emotional journey): As the episode begins, it’s the item he needs to commit suicide; As the episode ends, it’s the thing which provides him salvation when he realizes that he wants to live.

18) According to showrunner Ian Goldberg, the fact that it should be June who finds John washed up at the shore of his cabin having turned is meant to mirror how they first met back in season four’s “Laura,” bringing their relationship full-circle.
