Fear The Walking Dead, Survival Rule Of The Week: It’s All About Trust
By Liam O'Leary
4) Who Do You Trust?
It was funny watching this week’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead because, if you took a step back, you had a lot of people putting trust in people they had no business trusting: Morgan and Daniel trusting anything Dakota says seems rather nonsensical considering what she did and how she reacted once she finally got what she’d wanted all along. Sarah not trusting Strand–you know what? That’s perfectly fine and makes perfect sense, so no arguments there. And Sherry putting faith in Virginia’s opinion of anybody save The Beginners sounds like utter madness. Just lots of distrust and thoroughly misplaced trust going on all around in this episode.
However, all of that made me think of something: Who do YOU trust?
On the surface, it’s a simple question: All you have to do is list the people you trust. But, once you start thinking about it and listing off names, one has to ask the next question: WHY?
Some people might say their families (Though not everybody), some might say their friends (If you don’t, can you really call them your “friend”?), others might say their coworkers. All of these would make sense. These people are likely the people you’re closest to, after all, but then, there will be entries on your lists that you don’t realize, and this is where the whole “WHY?” thing comes back into play.
Do you trust the news? Why?
Do you trust something you heard on Twitter or Youtube? Why?
Do you trust something you read on a random website? Why?
Do you trust a statistic you saw in a meme? Why?
You’re going around trusting things, not even realizing that you may not know why you’re doing it. The same thing can happen in a zombie apocalypse, where you start trusting someone who, realistically, you don’t know or may have no earthly reason to trust. If you’re around someone you know did something bad to a friend or family member…why would you trust that person? Because they said something that you want to agree with? Because they “confirmed” something you were already thinking? When you step back, you realize these are not good reasons to trust someone who has already proven untrustworthy!
Don’t do it.
You have to realize that there will be some people out there who are out to lie to and manipulate you, most likely for something that will not be good for you in the end. You need to learn to sniff out these people and their deceit before falling prey to their machinations.
