1) Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

This week’s episode of Fear The Walking Dead had a real downer ending, with Grace’s daughter Athena dying before she was even born. It was sad to watch because Grace was so inspired and made so optimistic by seeing Athena, only to have that optimism crushed by watching her child die before she even had a chance to live.

Sadly, that’s how a zombie apocalypse can be; I mean…it’s a friggin’ zombie apocalypse, it’s pretty self-explanatory.

My point is: Grace made things for herself much worse than they might have been by convincing herself that there was a (relatively) idyllic future waiting for Morgan and everyone else once she ensured that Athena was successfully born. By assuming so, she set herself up for utterly crushing disappointment, which, in the already bleak existence the group is having at this point, could destroy her will to go on.

For some, the will to keep going in the apocalypse will be very precarious, and something as devastating as losing a child, and the hopes you had for it, can easily be enough to cause you to fall.

I’m not saying you should think everything is going to be bad. All I’m saying is that you need to temper your expectations: If you convince yourself everything will be great, you can do yourself a lot of psychological damage if things turn to be…not so great.
