The Walking Dead: We only have 95 days until the premiere for season 11
By Renee Hansen
Filming for the eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead has already gotten underway and is expected to continue until March 2022. Fans are counting down the days until the premiere of this season. On August 22, 2021, AMC will air the first episode of this monumental season.
We are only 95 days away from the beginning of the end of this series that has been airing since 2010. The tenth season saw the end of the intense Whisperer war with Alpha, Beta and their horde. We also witnessed the return of Maggie Rhee and her son Hershel. There were many deaths along the way, Siddiq, Laura, Gamma, Earl, Alpha, Beta and we witnessed the death of Lucille in a flashback.
This season also gave us the third part to season 10, dubbed 10c, which gave us some individual stories that didn’t really progress the main storyline. This bonus season did introduce us to two new groups, the Reapers, who have been tracking Maggie and her new group, and the Commonwealth, who captured Princess, Ezekiel, Yumiko and Eugene.
How will the final season of The Walking Dead round out the story we have been following for so long?
It is hard to imagine a world without The Walking Dead series. Fans have invested so many hours watching and re-watching the flagship series that it will be a strange transition when that final episode airs.
The series currently has many loose ends, but which ones will have a resolution by the end?
Maggie and Negan: this is one confrontation that needs to happen. The last time we saw Negan, he returned to Alexandria to stay, regardless of the outcome. No one would blame Maggie if she killed him since he is the one who brutally bludgeoned her beloved husband to death. But will this actually happen?
There are so many characters who have just dropped off the grid. Where are they? What happened to them? It would be nice to find out where some of these characters have gone.
The Commonwealth. Will this be the Commonwealth of the comics? Comic book fans are hoping to see this story play out on the screen. Some characters will have to be subbed in as ones from the comics have left or have been killed.
The CRM. Will we see more of the group that took Rick? We have seen more of the CRM in the spin-off series The Walking Dead: World Beyond. But, if the Reapers and Commonwealth take up much of the story for the final season, perhaps the CRM will appear in the movies?
How will they set up Carol and Daryl to go off on their own to lead into their spin-off series? Will Rick Grimes return for the very end of the series? So many questions that need to be answered before this ends.
There hasn’t been an official trailer for season eleven, but there have been a couple of in-production teasers showing some BTS clips. The trailer will most likely air soon, perhaps during the Fear the Walking Dead season six finale on June 13. Wouldn’t that be cool?
Many fans weren’t happy with the ‘bottle neck’ episodes of season 10c. In an interview with TV Line, showrunner Angela Kang has reassured fans that season eleven will start right back to being big and scope-y.
"“When we start [the final season], we’re rockin’ and rollin,’” showrunner Angela Kang tells TVLine. Forget intimate bottle episodes and character studies. “We’re back to being big and scope-y.”"
Scott Gimple, chief content officer, did a recent interview on TWDUniverse Twitch stream and stated that things would get “very, very, very, very dark.” But, reassured fans there would be some bright spots.
This season of The Walking Dead will be bittersweet, knowing that we get closer to the end with each episode. But that won’t be the end of the franchise. The Daryl and Carol spin-off is rumored to be released in 2023, Tales of the Walking Dead anthology series is in the works, Fear the Walking Dead will be entering its seventh season, TWD Movies are still happening, and who knows what other spin-offs will grow from the roots that the main series has started.
