Fear The Walking Dead, Survival Rule Of The Week: The Hidden Threat
By Liam O'Leary
5) There May Be Bigger Threats Out There Than You Realize.
How well do you know the area around you? You might be able to navigate through it, but do you know what all the buildings are?
The reason I ask is that, in a zombie apocalypse, the knowledge of what is actually around you might just save your life.
Think about what is the impending threat at this moment in Fear The Walking Dead: A weirdo death cult using nuclear weapons launched from a beached submarine to destroy everyone in Texas.
Part of the reason this is such a threat to Morgan and company is that no one knew that the sub (Or its formidable weaponry) was even there. While Morgan had been establishing his network of trying to help other survivors, establishing the convoy, and throughout his war with Virginia, he, everyone in his group, Virginia, and everyone amongst the Pioneers were blissfully ignorant of the danger that lay beached on the shores of Galveston.
Now, if either Morgan or Virginia had ventured out there, they might have either seen the U.S.S. Pennsylvania themselves, or met someone from there who could tell them about it. Either way, if they knew about the ship, it might have gotten them thinking about what it carried and maybe realize the potential threat such a vessel could pose.
You see, while most people are (Rightfully) worried about zombies, and hostiles, and diseases, and the like, there are some threats out there that never even cross people’s minds. A wayward nuclear-armed vessel is one of them, and, as crazy as it might seem, it’s not entirely implausible of a problem to worry about. Think about it: In a situation like The Walking Dead, where death for any reason leads to zombification, a situation could arise where someone on a submarine crew turns, and, in such tight confines, especially if no one knows what they’re dealing with, a zombie outbreak could very quickly get out of hand, and lead to such a vessel being in the state we see it in in Fear, open for anyone to get their hands on.
If such a situation were to occur, and you weren’t aware, you could be sitting on a veritable time bomb, where all it may take is one deranged person with access to wipe the place you’re surviving in off the face of the map, without you even knowing it was possible.
The best things I can advise for such situations is to try to find out where the nearest nuclear power plant, chemical processing or refining plant, or naval base may be so that you know if you and your group are in range to be affected by the fallout from any of the nasty materials that may be housed there.
Barring that, it would also not be a bad idea to set up your base in a building that has a fallout shelter. It wouldn’t be that difficult, as many buildings built during the Cold War would still have signed on them, indicating their secondary use as one.
Why do this, though? Because, as unlikely as it may be, it would be smart to have a contingency plan in place if you discovered that a lunatic had the ability to blow the town you’re surviving in (As well as most of the surrounding countryside) to Kingdom Come.
The scariest thing about a zombie apocalypse is all the threats that you don’t see coming. This is why you follow…The Rules.
And that’s your Walking Dead, Survival Rule Of The Week! There are more threats in the zombie apocalypse than you might realize, and a lot of them won’t be so obvious.
