4) “You Will Plant Trees Under Whose Shade You’ll Never Sit.”

I don’t know where I first heard that quote (Or some variation on it), but after watching this week’s episode of Fear, I couldn’t help but think of it.

Maybe it was because this episode began with Rachel, the wife of the man who saved Morgan’s life, after realizing that she couldn’t get herself and baby Morgan out of dodge walking on her broken leg, chose instead to strap her daughter onto her back, tie herself to Valley Town’s adopted dog, Rufus, and commit suicide, knowing that her walker could keep going and that Rufus, a bloodhound, would, eventually, bring her daughter to someone who could care for her. She sacrificed herself for the future that she knew her daughter could have.

Just as I said that the zombie apocalypse is not a guaranteed death sentence, neither is your survival guaranteed: There is always the chance you won’t make it.

But, if you’re not alone, then you can always take steps to ensure that you’ve paved the way for whomever you leave behind so that they can have a better chance at surviving, even if it’s without you.

What you can do for those you leave behind depends on your circumstances, but things like fortifying your base, stocking up supplies, getting rid of threats, even something as simple as bringing them to good people or a safe place might be enough.

Even if it’s the end for you, so long as you do what you can to help, it doesn’t have to be the end for the people who you might leave behind.
