Eugene has long been a character in The Walking Dead, of which fans of the show have had many opinions. But this Mr. Smarty-pants is vital to the upcoming season 11 and the future of the group.

When we were first introduced to Eugene (Josh McDermitt) back in season 4, it’s fair to say he was a world away from where he is now. He hid in Abraham and Rosita’s shadow for a long while as he calculated the best route he had for survival. Despite his mistakes and lies about being a scientist, this was essential to his character making it to Season 11 of the show.

Season 11 begins on August 22, for UK viewers August 23, and will consist of 24 episodes broken into three parts and will ultimately lead to the final episode ever. However, before we get to this point, we still have a whole new range of stories and communities to explore within the show. Eugene is why we have been introduced to a mysterious new community that could change the future.

10 reasons why Eugene is vital to season 11 of The Walking Dead

10. He is the reason why the group has now made human contact with the Commonwealth. His radio calls from his solo man AV club at Hilltop, with Stephanie, have led to this point and to ‘Saving The Future Hope Mankind.’ Even though it has led to his, Yumiko, Princess and Ezekiel’s kidnap, if anyone can wiggle their way out of this – it’s Eugene.

9. His kidnapping. Eugene has been kidnapped 6 times, a TWD record. From the awful train carts at Terminus – to Daryl and Rosita’s kidnapping of the bullet maker himself from the Sanctuary, Eugene is no stranger to danger. But, he knows what to do to escape out of the pickles he finds himself in.

8. His bond with Stephanie. If the comics are anything to go by, Eugene and Stephanie enter a loving (and Eugene’s first-ever real ) relationship until Stephanie sadly falls ill. They talked via radio for a while before their arranged meet-up when Eugene’s bike fall sadly made him and the group fall late to their date. But the bond he and Stephanie have seemed raw and by him hopefully having her on his side – it can be a light solution to either getting back to Alexandria unharmed or building a new community with ‘Like-Minded Folks.’

7. He is still an engineer. Eugene has served as an engineer between communities for a while now, so this may be a saving grace if he too gets interrogated as Princess did. We did hear a snippet of his interrogation in a teaser released ahead of season 11’s release. He is answering some very random questions, including one about a Measles Vaccination, which may be discussed on the Talking Dead preview https://undeadwalking.com/2021/06/14/walking-dead-s11-preview-hosted-chris-hardwick. Should they ask about work, which is pretty likely considering how the Commonwealth works and would match to the system they run by in the comics, this can be a beacon of light to Eugene’s safety and hopeful safety of the rest of his group.

6. He is bringing fashion to the apocalypse. Eugene brings the sex! He also brings a cool bolo tie and swanky Denim Jacket to his recent episodes. Need I say more – he has definitely adapted and changed and grown during his time on the show!

5. He is the bullet maker. Eugene is the trusted bullet maker in the apocalypse. This is another skill well within his skill set that doesn’t just benefit him but all of the people looking for them or needing them. He can make these homemade, fresher than Carol’s cookies! Maybe a new bullet Bakery for Eugene in the commonwealth?

4. His bond with Rosita. Eugene and Rosita definitely have history. Their love triangle with Gabriel and Saddiq broke Eugene’s heart and has been a strong reason why Eugene is where he is now. With Rosita’s rejection leading him to the Hilltop, which led him to Stephanie – sometimes love can come from heartbreak. And after he and Rosita escaped the Whisperers and right back in season 4 when she, and Abraham, made it their mission to get him to Washington to protect him – Rosita won’t allow Eugene’s disappearance to go on for long before she goes to save her ‘Proverbial BFF.’

3. The braid. The Mullet of Life gave Eugene power and got him through every bad situation, and I think the braid can also give him this power – maybe it can be a new weapon against the Commonwealth officers?!

2. Build trust with Communities. Eugene has a strong bond with Hilltop and Alexandria. If he can grow and ‘Assimilate’ with other communities, then maybe the Commonwealth can be a perfect new ally and make the bold voyage worthwhile. In the broken world, any safe community is vital. So far, it doesn’t seem that way – but hey, it’s The Walking Dead, so who knows what could happen!

1. His Arc. Eugene has had an incredible Arc since season 4 that has left no stone unturned. He is a fascinating character with many stories still to look into in this last upcoming season. He deserves respect and is definitely a vital piece of The Walking Dead Universe Puzzle! And I can’t wait to see what happens in the show next! #WeLoveYouEugene

All in all, this show is never easy to predict, but that’s what makes it so great. And Eugene is super important to the series!
