Strand’s selfishness can cause problems

5) Don’t Be A “That Guy.”

Strand didn’t think through his plan to throw Morgan to the proverbial wolves and stop the missiles because, quite simply, he was being selfish, thinking only about the glory of being the hero and not really about much else. This is a classic case of being what I like to call a “That Guy.” Basically, a person who’s selfish to the point of being to their own detriment.

Some out there think survival means being ultra cutthroat and pragmatic and screw over everyone else. Logically, I can understand this: The idea is that since you need to look out for your own survival, to hell with everyone else.

The thing is, there are problems with that approach. Firstly, there’s a good chance that you neglect to think about the long-term ramifications of such an outlook.

Secondly, behave this way long enough, and eventually, it’s going to bite you in the ass. Whether it’s because someone else sees you screw over somebody or because a group you might be in decides they can’t trust you/get sick and tired of you, or you wind up by yourself and get attacked when or where you’re vulnerable, and you die.

Look, I’m not saying you need to be as naive and trusting as the people of Terminus were, but being ultra selfish is a failure of a survival strategy because, inevitably, it makes you more vulnerable. I call it “selfish to the point of being to their own detriment” for a reason. You can be a “That Guy” all you like, but it won’t make you a better survivor.

People may say that “Nice guys finish last,” but at least they finish. “That Guy”s? …They don’t even get that far.
