5) Depression

Now, I know first-hand that depression isn’t “little” to the person suffering from it, but when compared to things that might seem more immediate, like a herd of zombies, or an army of armed hostiles, you wouldn’t think of it as a huge threat.

But, that’s what makes depression a threat: You don’t realize how dangerous it is until you’re looking at the edge of the cliff, hearing that voice tell you to jump.

Part of what makes it so much more dangerous in a zombie apocalypse is that there’s so much going on around you that can so easily exacerbate depression. When you watch the world as you know, it descends into absolute madness; when you see society tear itself apart, when you see the future you thought you were going to have disintegrated, when you see the dead destroy everything, and when you see people you love become the walking dead, it suddenly makes that voice telling you to jump off the proverbial cliff a lot louder and a lot clearer.

Now, if you can get past the outbreak, you might be able to fend that voice off for a while, but it never completely goes away; it just waits for things to go bad on you to roll back in when you need it the least, and “encourage” you in just the wrong way.

There is a litany of things in the zombie apocalypse out to kill you, and most of them are obvious enough that you take notice of them immediately or, at the very least, are always keeping an eye out for them. However, these things, when compared to those more obvious threats, appear relatively small. They’re not bearing down on you like an army of the dead, but if you don’t watch for them, they can kill you all just the same.

The trick is to be on the watch for them.
