Canales plays a journalist named Cristina, who travels to her ancestral home in Veracruz. She is investigating the practice of witchcraft and the healers in that region for an assignment. She is abducted by the locals, who claim a demon possesses her.
A bruja or female practitioner of witchcraft performs many rituals on Cristina as she tries to exorcise the demon. Although born in Veracruz, Cristina doesn’t speak the language, so her cousin Miranda translates for her so she can understand what is going on. As she learns more about the rituals and the demon the bruja thinks is possessing her, Cristina starts to believe she may actually have a demon inside her.
The film dives deeper into personal demons as Cristina deals with the loss of her mother, losing sight of her cultural background and her life in the US, and the problems she faces there.
The trailer below shows a very graphic and horror-filled film. Rotten Tomatoes has given the film a 100% rating, with critics sighting Canales’s performance in this film as something you don’t want to miss.
Brigitte Kali Canales The Old Ways movie
The Old Ways will release on Netflix on August 5, and fans of horror and demon possession films won’t want to miss this. Fans of Fear the Walking Dead will want to watch Canales amazing performance in this film.
Canales played Rachel in Fear the Walking Dead in season 6. She was introduced during the season 6 premiere, “The End is the Beginning.” Rachel and her husband Isaac (Michael Abbott Jr.) fled Virginia (Colbie Minifie) and her Pioneers to establish their own community. This area is located near the dam that would eventually become Morgan’s (Lennie James) community.
Rachel gives birth to a baby girl she names Morgan. We don’t see a lot of Rachel throughout the season, but in the season finale, Rachel sacrifices herself so that her daughter can live. We see Rachel attempting to change a flat tire when she hears Morgan’s message about the nuke. She ends up breaking her leg, which leads her to improvise a plan to save her child. She gags herself, then ties Rufus to her person, straps Morgan on her back, and disembowels herself so she can reanimate. She hopes that Rufus will lead them to someone who will save baby Morgan. It is a heartwrenching scene to watch, knowing she is doing what she feels is best for her child. Parents watching this scene can wholeheartedly understand her sacrifice.
Canales was outstanding in this final scene of Fear the Walking Dead. I can’t wait to see her performance in The Old Ways.
