Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman will see another of his comic series adapted, this time into a film. Deadline has reported that the science fiction comic Oblivion Song, created by Kirkman and illustrated by Lorenzo de Felici, is in the works to become a film with Jake Gyllenhaal set to produce and star.

The Oblivion Song graphic novel series tells of an apocalyptic hellscape of Oblivion, located in a part of Philadelphia that was lost, along with its 300,000 citizens. The government recovered as many people as it could and eventually gave up. Ten years later, one man, Nathan Cole, hasn’t given up on finding more survivors. Each day he travels to Oblivion on rescue missions to locate any other survivors. Is he only searching for survivors? Or does something else motivate him to risk his life?

The graphic novel series Oblivion Song released its first issue in 2018. Issue #33 release this week and will end the series with Issue #36.  Kirkman made this statement on the Image Comics website:

"If you’ve been paying attention to the buildup of this story from arc to arc, you might have suspected that we were nearing a natural end point…and we are, issue #36 was always planned to be the final issue"

Skybound Entertainment and Universal Pictures are developing the film. The script will be written by Sean O’Keefe (Wonderland). Joining Gyllenhall as producer will be Riva Marker of Nine Stories and Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst of Skybound.

Kirkman and David Alpert founded Skybound Entertainment in 2010. Skybound is a multi-platform entertainment company led by passionate creators of content for all sizes of screens. The company believes in and advocates for creator rights, believing that creators should maintain creative control.
