Corey Hawkins cast in musical adaptation of The Color Purple

The Walking Dead alum Corey Hawkins is cast in another musical. After his stellar performance In the Heights, Hawkins has been cast in Warner Brothers’ musical adaptation of The Color Purple. 

The musical will be based on the 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker that Stephen Spielberg adapted into a film in 1985. That film marks Whoopi Goldberg’s feature debut and featured Oprah Winfrey in her breakout role. The novel was also adapted into a 2005 Broadway musical that earned 11 Tony award nominations.

The story is set in early 20th century rural Georgia, where a teenage African American girl Celie, endures abuse from several men in her life. Over the years, she experiences trauma and eventual triumph.

The Wrap has reported that Hawkins will play the role of Harpo Johnson, the son of “Mister” Albert Johnson. The only other casting so far has been the role of Squeak that will be played by H.E.R.

Blitz Bazawle will direct with Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones producing. Executive producing will be Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini and Mara Jacobs.

Hawkins has starred in many projects since he departed from The Walking Dead. Straight Outta Compton, Kong: Skull Island, 24: Legacy, Placeholders, BlacKkKlandsman, 6 Underground and Survive, Dust.

Next, we will see him in The Tragedy of Macbeth. This is a black and white film based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy, directed by Joel Coen, the first film directed by a solo Coen brother. Hawkins will star with Frances McDormand, Denzel Washington, Brenden Gleeson, Harry Melling, Ralph Ineson and Stephen Root. This film is set to premiere at the 2021 New York Film Festival on September 24, 2021.

He will also star in Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on a single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 Dracula novel.
