The Walking Dead, Survival Rule Of The Week: The Hard Choices
By Liam O'Leary
In the face of The Walking Dead, you gotta do what you gotta do
There will always be things that we just plain don’t want to do. That’s just how things are. Whether it’s a school project, an assignment for work, chores around the house, or dealing with the government, there are things we don’t like to do but have to do.
…Of course, this is much worse in a zombie apocalypse.
For example: In this week’s episode of The Walking Dead, after the group was scattered, and several members were killed by The Reapers, Negan kept suggesting to Maggie that they abort the mission. A suggestion which Maggie kept shooting down. Why? Because, with Alexandria so desperate for food after the scorched-Earth policy inflicted on them by the Whisperers, they couldn’t afford to not get those supplies. Alexandria is, at this point, starving, and if Maggie’s group doesn’t succeed, everyone in the town will starve.
Because of the nature of a zombie apocalypse, the things you need to do become absolute necessities. A weakness in your perimeter? That needs to be dealt with, or it will be found and exploited by zombies or hostiles. Do guns need cleaning? That needs doing, or else you run the risk of them malfunctioning when you’re trying to hunt or fight. Supplies running low? That needs taking care of, or else, before you know it, you have no tools to repair your base, no means of defending yourself, or, most importantly, no food.
In a zombie apocalypse, you gotta do what you gotta do, because those who don’t…don’t survive.
