Surviving Whisperers was adapted from Walking Dead comics 173
By Renee Hansen
During The Walking Dead Episode “Out of the Ashes,” a group of survivors from the Whisperers was found at Hilltop. This was a shock to most viewers because we thought they were all dead. Comic book readers perhaps weren’t quite as shocked because, in Issue 173, a few Whisperers are found at a campsite by Aaron and Paul (Jesus), discussing thoughts of leaving the group.
The series and the comic book story differ where this group of wayward Whisperers is concerned. In the comics, Aaron and Paul kill several of the group and the three remaining members, the ones who didn’t want to continue with the Whisperer’s way of life, were asked to join Alexandria and Hilltop. They quickly agree.
As we saw in the series, this group wanted to fight first and talk later. They had been living at Hilltop presumably since soon after the night it was burned. They took up their old ways of using the walkers to camouflage themselves. But are they a threat?
The Walking Dead, will we see more of the Whisperers?
Aaron acted impulsively, which most likely caused the group to attack in the first place. His emotions were running high, and he is dealing with some heavy stuff at the moment, causing him to act very out of character.
After all was said and done, Keith (Brad Fleischer), the lead Whisperer, was very helpful by telling the group that Connie was alive and where she was last seen. By extending this kindness, it is hopeful that this is the last time Aaron and the group will have an issue with the small group of last remaining Whisperers.
It doesn’t appear that there is more to this group than what was found at Hilltop. For the safety of a weakened Alexandria, let’s hope that is the case.
The Walking Dead “On the Inside” airs on AMC on September 26. This episode is now available to stream on AMC+.
